Registration


 

Early registration by mail or online may ensure placement in the classes you select. Since some classes do fill early, we strongly recommend that you register as soon as possible.

 

Course Load

Undergraduate students may register for a maximum of seven semester hours per session or a total of 14 semester hours during Summer Sessions I and II, three or four credits for Summer Session III. Graduate students may enroll in no more than two courses in any one summer session.

 

Registration By Mail/Online

Continuing Students
If you attended Hofstra during the spring 2006 semester, you may pre-register by mail or online at the same time you register for the fall semester. Please use the Hofstra Online registration system which can be reached through the portal at my.hofstra.edu. If you prefer to register by mail, you should use the registration forms previously sent to you for each of the summer sessions. DO NOT USE THE REGISTRATION CARDS PROVIDED IN THIS BULLETIN.

NOTE: If your registration forms indicate that an alternate PIN is required for registration you must obtain your adviser’s signature on the form submitted. For further information regarding summer registration, consult the instructions sent with your pre-registration materials.

Former Students
Those students who attended Hofstra prior to the spring 2006 semester may register in advance. To have a Summer Sessions Bulletin mailed to you, contact the Office of Admissions at (516) 463-6700.

Visiting and New Students

  • To register, complete the registration form included in the center of the print Bulletin.
  • If you are planning to attend Summer Session I, return the Summer Session I registration card to the Student Accounts Office no later than May 10.
  • If you are planning to attend Summer Session II, return the Summer Session II registration card to the Student Accounts Office no later than June 14.
  • If you are planning to attend Summer Session III, return the Summer Session III registration card to the Student Accounts Office no later than July 18.
  • If you are enrolling for more than one summer session at the same time, please write a separate check for each session.
  • Students registering by mail must include tuition and fees. See Tuition and Fees.
  • Please make checks payable to Hofstra University and mail to: Student Accounts Office, Memorial Hall, Room 206, 126 Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY 11549-1260. There is an envelope provided in the center of the print Bulletin for your use.

Walk-In Registration

You may bring registration forms with payment directly to the Student Administrative Complex, Memorial Hall, Room 206, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday. During the summer the Student Accounts Office is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Thursday and until 4 p.m. on Friday.

Summer Enrollment Services Days

In Memorial Hall, ALL STUDENTS MAY REGISTER at the regular registration periods as follows:

Session I: Thursday, May 25, Noon-7 p.m.
Session II: Thursday, June 29, Noon-7 p.m.
Session III: Thursday, August 3, Noon-7 p.m.

Registration begins in the Student Administrative Complex, Memorial Hall, Room 206. Registration must be completed prior to the date of the first class meeting.

Transfer of Credits to Home Institution

College students planning to use course work at Hofstra to meet home-school degree requirements are strongly recommended to consult, in advance, their college for approval of transfer credit (written approval is advisable). Each institution sets its own rules for acceptance of transfer credit. Transcripts may be ordered through the Hofstra Online Information System.

At the end of the summer session (not before the last week), you may request a transcript of your scholastic record be sent to your home institution. There is no fee for official transcripts sent to a third party; $3 per transcript is charged for each student copy. A student in good standing may receive a transcript required by the Armed Forces without charge. Students may also request copies of course descriptions at $2/page. All requests are processed through the Office of Academic Records upon written request and payment of the appropriate fee. No transcript will be issued for a student who is in arrears. Transcripts are processed in the order in which applications are received. During peak periods, you may expect a two- to three-week delay.

Change of Address


Students must report a change of home or local address to the Office of Academic Records immediately on a special form provided by that office. Change of address can also be processed through the Hofstra Online Information System.

Candidates for Graduation


Hofstra students who plan to complete graduation requirements during the summer must file an application for August graduation at the Office of Academic Records. Undergraduates must file no later than March 1. Graduates must file no later than June 17 if their last class is in Summer Session I, July 15 if their last class is in Summer Session II and August 15 if their last class is in Summer Session III. Late applications for graduation are subject to a late fee. All courses to be applied toward the degree must be completed by the last day of classes.

Veterans


Veterans and dependents of deceased or disabled veterans, and active duty personnel drawing veterans educational benefits should visit the Veterans’ Representative in the Student Account’s Office, Memorial Hall, Room 205 or call (516) 463-6680 opt. 3, several months before the semester begins.

Auditing Policy

The privilege of auditing courses is not available to students currently enrolled at Hofstra or at other institutions of higher education. Additionally, students admitted to professional schools may not audit Hofstra courses in preparation for enrollment at those institutions. Auditing of undergraduate courses is made available to individuals not enrolled in any institution of higher education as a service to enrich their knowledge in a particular area, upon payment of 50-percent of the regular part-time undergraduate tuition. Hofstra alumni may audit for a reduced fee. You do have the option of converting the courses from a noncredit to credit basis within the first week of the summer session. Permission of the instructor, payment of adjusted tuition and fees and meeting all University admissions conditions are required prior to such conversions. Changes of Program or Withdrawal


Upon written notification to the Office of Student Accounts, you may withdraw from a summer session course without instructor’s approval through June 20 for Summer Session I, July 25 for Summer Session II and August 18 for Summer Session III. After these dates and prior to the last day of classes, instructor’s permission is required.

You may withdraw from your summer session courses at any time prior to the last day of classes. There is no entry on the permanent record of a course dropped during the first week of classes. However, the statement ‘Complete Withdrawal’ shall be entered on the permanent record of any student who completely withdraws from the University before the end of that summer session. To do so, you must complete a withdrawal form or mail in a written request. Any undergraduate student withdrawing without official notification may not have a remission of tuition.

Changes of programs and withdrawal forms can be obtained at the Student Administrative Complex on the second floor of Memorial Hall.

Advisement


All students attending classes who wish to confer with their advisers or instructors may make appointments in the department office.

Hofstra students who are continuing their studies during the summer may speak with an assistant dean in the Office of Academic Advisement, in Memorial Hall, Room 101. The advisers will address any questions on class scheduling, program and degree requirements, declaring or changing majors and general academic policy and deadlines. Students who are considering graduate or professional school can also receive helpful advice. Each matriculated undergraduate student’s academic folder, from application to the present, is kept in this office and is available for review upon request. Once a student has declared a major, he/she should meet with a faculty adviser in that major department.

Visiting students may stop by to discuss Hofstra programs and courses and gain assistance with scheduling. Students are responsible, however, for consulting with their college or university for approval of transfer credits to meet home school degree requirements.

Continuing Education students, once admitted to one of the certificate programs in accounting, finance, general management, human resources management, international business, labor studies, marketing, business information systems, or the post-baccalaureate premedical program, can receive assistance with registration materials.

During the fall and spring semesters, the Office of Academic Advisement is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to
5 p.m. When classes are in session, evening advisement is available Monday through Thursday until 8 p.m. During the summer, beginning May 26, hours are Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Friday until 4 p.m. In addition, when summer classes are in session, the office is open Monday and Thursday evenings until 7 p.m., by appointment only.
