Fax: (516) 463-4936
Hours: Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m.- 7 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Students have the responsibility to plan ahead, anticipate costs, budget resources, and request aid for the entire academic period. Anticipated costs include not only tuition and fees but a reasonable estimate for books and supplies, transportation, room and board when applicable, and personal expenses.

Hofstra awards financial assistance to 70 percent of its students in the form of fellowships, scholarships, grants, loans and employment opportunities.

Fellowships and scholarships are applied to tuition and awarded to qualified full- and part-time graduate students based on academic excellence and/or demonstrated need.

In addition, financial assistance is also available through state and federal agencies. Such support may depend on the financial need of the student. All scholarships, assistantships and grants, on a graduate level, are administered by the student’s respective academic department. Graduate students should contact their departments for additional information.

Hofstra University awards scholarships and other financial assistance on a nondiscriminatory basis.

Application and Reapplication Procedures

^ TOP

Requests for financial assistance will not influence a candidate’s consideration for admission in any way. Financial aid decisions will be made after the student has been accepted, and the student will be informed by mail and e-mail to their Hofstra e-mail address.

Graduate and professional students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). FAFSAs are available at: www.FAFSA.ed.gov. Hofstra’s federal school code is 002732. Students may be required to submit copies of income tax returns and other information in support of their federal student aid applications. The Hofstra Financial Aid Office notifies students what additional information is needed. Students who are residents of New York state can also apply for the New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) by completing the FAFSA, which will direct you to complete a TAP Express Application online at www.HESC.org. Hofstra’s TAP code is 5265. To be considered for federal and state assistance, the FAFSA must be filed every year.

To be considered for federal and state assistance the FAFSA must be filed every year.

Verification

^ TOP

The federal processor uses a system of edits, or flags, which produces a selection of applications for verification. If a student’s application is selected for verification, this may mean that a data element in his or her application does not fit generally recognized patterns (not necessarily that the element is incorrect; it merely must be verified), or that the student was simply selected at random. The University’s Office of Financial Aid may also select files for verification if there appears to be a conflict of information. The student is notified on the Student Aid Report (SAR) and by Hofstra University if they are selected.

If an application is selected, the following required documentation must be submitted to the Financial Aid Office:

  • 2008- 2009 Verification Worksheet
  • Signed copy of student’s (and spouse’s) 2007 federal income tax return and all schedules (W-2 forms alone cannot be used for verification)
  • Students who do not have a copy of their tax return are to call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 and ask for a 1722 letter or tax transcript for the 2007 calendar year. This form is acceptable in lieu of an actual copy of a tax return.
  • Other documents as needed/requested.

Federal financial aid can not be disbursed and Stafford and Graduate PLUS loans may not be certified until verification is complete. Estimated financial aid awards will be rescinded if verification is not completed within specified deadlines. In this case, any outstanding charges (such as, tuition, fees etc.) become due immediately. Students will be notified of any adjustments that are necessary and corrections will be made for information that is not accurate, which may affect a student’s ability to receive aid. If the University’s Financial Aid Office must make corrections to a student’s FAFSA, the student will be sent an updated SAR from the federal processor.

In order to receive Stafford or Graduate PLUS loans, verification must be completed prior to the last date of the term in which the student wishes to borrow funds.

Federal Work Study (FWS)

^ TOP

Various jobs are available for students who demonstrate financial need. The federal government allocates funds for these jobs to the University. Employment is available during the regular academic year and for the summer. Contact the Financial Aid Office for additional information.

Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP)

^ TOP

In the FFEL Program, the federal government guarantees low-cost (Stafford) and Graduate PLUS loans to qualified students. The loans are originated by participating lending institutions. Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) annually to have their Stafford Loan eligibility determined.

There are two kinds of Stafford Loans⬔subsidized and unsubsidized. These loans are not mutually exclusive; therefore many students qualify for both types. Eligible students, who have not previously received a Stafford Loan guaranteed by HESC, must sign a master promissory note. Notes may be signed at HESC with your federal PIN.

Beginning May 15 students should log on to HESC to complete an electronic Master Promissory Note (e-MPN). Click on the “Students, Families and Counselors” box. After that the student will need to click on the “complete the e-MPN” box. The instructions will direct the student to register for an HESC PIN if the student does not already have a PIN. This PIN will be of the student’s choosing; therefore, the same one assigned for completing the FAFSA can be used. The instructions will “walk” the student through the credit check process required to obtain a graduate PLUS loan. The student will be required to choose a lender when completing the e-MPN. The student may choose any lender from the drop-down menu at www.HESC.com, or any other lender that is approved to participate in the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program. For help choosing a lender and evaluating loan benefits, please go to www.nasfaa.org/redesign/ParentsStudents.html, www.finaid.org, or www.hostra.edu/learnaboutloans. If the student chooses not to sign the MPN electronically, please call 1-888-NYS-HESC to obtain a paper MPN. Paper MPN forms must be returned to: NYSHESC, 99 Washington Avenue, Albany, NY 12255. The student may use any lender/guarantor that participates in the FFEL Program. If the student wants to use a lender/guarantor that is not listed, contact the Office of Financial Aid at financialaid@hofstra.edu or by calling (516) 463-8000.

Federal Stafford Loan

^ TOP

Federal Subsidized Stafford Loans are available for graduate students. Graduate students may borrow up to $8,500 per year. Federal Subsidized Stafford Loans carry a fixed interest rate of 6.0 percent. While the student is enrolled at least half-time, payments on the loan are deferred. Repayment of both principal and interest begin six months after the student graduates, leaves school or becomes enrolled less than half-time.

Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loans

^ TOP

Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loans are also available for graduate students. Graduate students may borrow up to $12,000 per year. Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loans carry a fixed rate of 6.8 percent. Interest begins accruing on this loan during the in-school period. Typically the interest is capitalized and added to the outstanding principal on an annual basis. Repayment of principal and accrued interest begins six months after the student graduates, leaves school, or becomes enrolled less than half-time.

Federal Graduate PLUS Loans

^ TOP

Graduate PLUS Loans are available to graduate students to assist with educational expenses. These loans do carry a credit criteria and the lender has the final discretion on approval. Student must be enrolled at least half time (4.5 credits) and meet all the other federal eligibility criteria. The interest rate of the Graduate PLUS loan is fixed at 8.5%. The annual limit is the student’s cost of attendance minus any other type of financial aid and no aggregate limit exists. Accepting Graduate PLUS loans on the award notification will allow processing of loans to begin. First time borrowers must complete an Electronic Master Promissory Note at www.hesc.com. Repayment begins 60 days from the final disbursement for the loan period unless it is deferred. A FAFSA must be filed and Federal Stafford annual limits must be exhausted to enable the student to apply for the Graduate PLUS loan. Graduate PLUS borrowers must also complete loan counseling. This can be completed on the following website: www.mapping-your-future.org.

Federal Satisfactory Academic Progress

^ TOP

The academic standing of all graduate students will be reviewed each year. In addition to the program requirements to be considered in good standing, satisfactory academic progress for federal financial aid eligibility requires that graduate students must successfully complete at least 75% of the credits attempted each year.

State Grant

^ TOP

The New York State Tuition Assistance Program offers grants to state residents who attend colleges or universities located in the State of New York and are enrolled in a minimum of 12 credits per semester. Application is made by completing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid annually and a TAP Express Application.

Students must maintain satisfactory academic progress toward degree completion in the TAP Program. Satisfactory academic progress is measured by accrual of a specified number of credits each semester and achievement of a certain grade point average.
