  • WSC 1 - Composition

    Semester Hours: 3-4
    Fall, Spring
    An introduction to expository writing at the college level, with an emphasis on analysis and argument. Assignments in reading and writing are coordinated. In-class exercises including workshops and oral presentations.

    Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes:
    May not be taken on a Pass/D+/D/Fail basis. (Formerly ENGL 1.)



  • WSC 1A - Writing Studies and Composition Tutorial

    Semester Hours: 1
    Fall, Spring
    Taken in conjunction with WSC 1 to assist students in reaching a higher competency in writing English with clarity and precision. May not be used to satisfy the general University humanities requirement.

    Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes:
    (Formerly ENGL 1A; English Composition Tutorial/Workshop; Composition Workshop Credit.)



  • WSC 1T - Composition Tutorial

    Semester Hours: 1
    Fall, Spring, Summer
    Taken in conjunction with WSC 1 to assist students in reaching a higher competency in writing English with clarity and precision. May not be used to satisfy the general University humanities requirement.

    Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes:
    Pass/Fail grade only.



  • WSC 2 - Composition

    Semester Hours: 3


    Fall, Spring
    Continued instruction in expository writing, and an introduction to writing in the disciplines of the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. Reading and writing assignments are organized around a central theme.

     

    Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes:
    WSC 1 . May not be taken on a Pass/D+/D/Fail basis. The Writing Proficiency Exam is given as part of the course. (Formerly ENGL 2.)



  • WSC 2A - Writing Studies and Composition Tutorial

    Semester Hours: 1
    Fall, Spring
    WSC 2A is a workshop in argument and exposition. It focuses on organization, what it means to make an assertion and the nature of evidence.

    Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes:
    This course is required of students who do not fulfill the Writing Proficiency Exam requirement. Pass/D+/D/Fail grade only. (Formerly ENGL 2A; English Composition Tutorial/Workshop.)



  • WSC 12S - First-Year Seminar

    Semester Hours: 1-3
    Spring
    This course gives first-year students the opportunity to work in a seminar format with a member of the faculty in an area of the faculty member’s research interests.

    Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes:
    The course is open to first-year students only. Topics vary by semester. Students may take only one 12F or 12S seminar.



  • WSC 14F - (CP) First-Year Seminar

    Semester Hours: 3-4
    Fall
    This course gives first-year students the opportunity to work in a seminar format with a member of faculty in an area of the faculty member’s research interests.

    Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes:
    This course is open to first-year students only. Topics vary by semester. This course is offered for distribution credit; consult the Semester Planning Guide for proper category listing. Students may take only one 14F or 12F seminar and only one 14S or 12S seminar.



  • WSC 14S - (CP) First-Year Seminar

    Semester Hours: 3-4
    Spring

  • WSC 30 - Business Communication

    Semester Hours: 3
    Fall, Spring
    Open to interested students from any major, this course is aimed at students considering a business major or any career in the business or professional worlds. The course provides an examination of and systematic practice in business and professional writing strategies and styles, helping students determine the writing strategies that will be most effective in any particular interpersonal and organizational context. The course emphasizes mastery of professional language, application of logical reasoning skills to business writing, and development of digital and traditional research skills. This course also considers matters of structure and tone and introduces issues of ethics and psychology as they apply to business writing.

    Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes:
    WSC 1 . Successful completion of Writing Proficiency Exam. Required for all business majors who entered Hofstra prior to the fall semester of 1996. May not be used to satisfy the general University humanities requirement. Same as ENGL 30.



  • WSC 40 - Argument and Analysis

    Semester Hours: 3
    Fall, Spring
    Principles of analysis and argument as they apply to writing tasks commonly assigned in college and in the world of work. Expository writing for various audiences. Practice in revision and editing.

    Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes:
    WSC 1 and 2. May not be used to satisfy the general University humanities requirement. (Formerly ENGL 4.)



  • WSC 50 - Technical Communication

    Semester Hours: 3
    Fall, Spring
    Examines the use of language in settings that require technical reports and presentations. Study and practice of the basic principles of technical communications with attention to style, audience, research, visual aids, major report forms and oral presentations. May not be used to satisfy the general University humanities requirement.

    Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes:
    WSC 1, 2. Successful completion of Writing Proficiency Exam. (Formerly ENGL 5.)



  • WSC 102 - Grammar

    Semester Hours: 3
    Fall, Spring
    Instruction in the forms and functions of standard English grammar and their relation to meaning.

    Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes:
    WSC 1 and 2. Open only to students who have fulfilled the Writing Proficiency Exam requirement. Same as ENGL 102.



  • WSC 103 - Structure of English

    Semester Hours: 3
    Periodically
    Current linguistic methods applied to English: emphasis on structural linguistics, transformational grammar.

    Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes:
    WSC 1 and 2. Open only to students who have fulfilled the Writing Proficiency Exam requirement. Same as ENGL 103.



  • WSC 110 - Advanced Essay Writing: Beyond the Term Paper

    Semester Hours: 3
    Fall, Spring
    This course explores the essay in detail. Essays can be deeply personal or highly controversial, conversational or formal; they often combine narrative with argument and images with words. The course begins with a brief survey of invention practices: how do writers discover and develop an idea? how does this idea move to the page? how do audience and genre influence this movement? During the semester, the class will read exploratory, narrative, and research-based essays, using each form as a model for thinking and writing in academic and popular contexts. Throughout the semester, we will share, discuss, and assess student work in small-group and full-class forums.

    Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes:
    WSC 1 . WSC 110 may substitute for WSC 2  with permission of the departmental chairperson. (Formerly, Advanced Essay Writing.)



  • WSC 120 - (AA) Public Writing, Private Lives

    Semester Hours: 3
    Periodically
    This course investigates public discourse about private lives, with a focus on modes of narration and the kinds of social, political, or cultural work private writing accomplishes when enacted in the theater of the public.

    Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes:
    WSC 1  or permission of instructor.



  • WSC 121 - (AA) From Pictograph to Pixels: The Impact of Technologies on Literacies

    Semester Hours: 3
    Periodically
    This course explores questions and problems engendered by the multiple ways in which humans communicate (visually, textually, orally, etc.), along with concepts of literacy across four modalities of communication: oral, chirographic, typographic, and digital/electronic.

    Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes:
    WSC 1  and 2  or permission of the instructor. (Formerly 180F.)



  • WSC 122 - (AA) Navigating the Information Ocean: Research, Writing, and the Web

    Semester Hours: 3
    Periodically
    This course explores how learners and researchers decide which Web sources and information are reliable, valid, and appropriate for specific purposed and audiences, as it investigates the meanings of literacies in the digital age. Students may compose in multiple media.

    WSC 1  and 2  or permission of instructor.



  • WSC 155 A-Z - Independent Readings in Writing Studies and Composition

    Semester Hours: 3
    Periodically
    Independent studies in academic and professional writing and rhetoric across the disciplines. Students will read selections assigned by the instructor and prepare written work.

    Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes:
    WSC 1 and permission of instructor. Any course may be taken a number of times so long as there is a different letter designation each time it is taken.



  • WSC 156 A-Z - Independent Readings in Writing Studies and Composition

    Semester Hours: 3
    Periodically
