SED 181I - Workshops: Educational Implications: Artistic and Literacy Traditions of Italy


This course will focus on arts of Italy wait a view to designing instructional strategies and units that integrate the art and architecture of the Italian Renaissance. They will connect the art to the literary traditions of the times. Students will stay on the Amalfi coast, in Sorrento, and visit Rome and Florence, to learn how its art and architecture impart the arts and education. Students will visit an international school and learn about this country’s approaches to cultural education. Students will develop new approaches to teaching methodologies with a view to how environment and culture influence arts and language curriculum development. Students may focus on arts and architecture of the Renaissance, puppetry, drama mask-making, mural making, bookmaking and narrative art forms, all within Italian historical and aesthetic traditions. Additionally, they can combine their experience with the literacy course and discover how these art forms were connected in the folklore and drama of the times. Students will tour historical landmarks and museums in Rome, Florence and the Amalfi coast and develop a resource portfolio. Tours will be provided by local experts in each area. Independent study students will join all tours and develop a unit of study with Dr. Zwirn that relates to their major or area of interest. Students will participate in this experience with a perspective of their major or professional field such as art education, elementary or secondary education, or museum education.
