LAW 2955 - Use of Force in International Law: From Peacekeeping to Terrorism

This course explores the legality of the use of force in international law in light of recent world events. It examines the use of force by states under the UN charter, by regional organizations like NATO and the OAS, and under UN Security Council measures to maintain and restore international peace and security. The course analyzes the use of force in circumstances of the traditional laws of war (humanitarian law), selfdefense, sanctions, peacekeeping and humanitarian intervention. Recent events in New York City, Afghanistan, Kosovo and Liberia are discussed, as well as more historical events like the Persian Gulf War and the Cuban missile crisis.
