WST 1D - (IS) Introduction to Women’s StudiesSemester Hours: 3
Fall, Spring
An interdisciplinary course which introduces the major ideas and concepts of women’s studies and a variety of gender-related issues. The course examines the historical roots of women’s inequality, provides theoretical tools with which to analyze life conditions and issues of special concern to women and creates an interdisciplinary foundation of basic concepts and theoretical and literary perspectives in women’s studies. Drawing upon material from a wide range of disciplines, including literature, performance, history, sociology, anthropology, art history, philosophy, languages, linguistics, political science and psychology, the course prepares students for more discipline-specific courses with special focus on women in these and other departments, as well as for further course work in women’s studies. This course also fosters both written and or communcation skills; students engage course materials both in written assignments and in collaborative discussions of issues and texts.
