BIO 143 - Microbiology

Semester Hours: 4
Fall
The study of microbial cell structure, physiology, genetics and taxonomy. Laboratory exercises focus on identification, growth, metabolism and genetics of prokaryotes and lower eukaryotes, with special emphasis on bacteria and yeasts. Consideration is given to microbial interactions with the environment and to aspects of pathogenicity and host resistance in response to both bacterial and protozoan infections. Students will participate in group-based ineractive workshops which they Will be expected to inform/persuade/defend vlewpoints to fellow students in collaborative discussions. (3 hours lecture, 3 hours laboratory.)

BIO 135, 136; CHEM 3A & 4A, 3B & 4B.
