SOC 160 - (BH) Sociology of GenderSemester Hours: 3 Once a year
This course analyzes the ramifications of being born female or male
(biological sex) and the ways in which gender is socially constructed
and maintained by social, economic and political institutions. Also
explored is gender as a power system and the consequences of recent
shifts in the meaning of masculinity and femininity. The course
examines how gender roles and relations are contested by social
movements and social change. Students develop an understanding of the
basic concepts of gender, gender roles and the gender system.
