LAW 2991 - Policing Youth: Cross-National Comparisons

How are juvenile offenders treated differently from adult offenders? To what extent should they be? Using these questions as a framework, the course will examine the various historical and contemporary state responses to children behaving badly in the United States, Europe and the developing world; these would include the role of police force in the community as well as the formal governmental prosecution or treatment function.  In addition to studying controlling case law and statutory innovations, the course will also consider the value of psychological and social science data on adolescents in suggesting future strategies and directions for the juvenile justice practitioner.
