Rehabilitation Counseling, Advanced Certificate

The Advanced Certificate in Rehabilitation Counseling is intended for
rehabilitation practitioners in the counseling field who wish to pursue
rehabilitation counseling courses and/or field work to qualify for the
CRC (Certified Rehabilitation Counselor) or the Mental Health
Practitioner’s licensing examination. The 12-24 semester hour
program beyond the master’s degree provides students with the
opportunity to complete the needed course work as specified by the
Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification (for the CRC) or
by the New York State Education Department (for the Mental Health
Practitioner’s license). The number of semester hours to be taken
would depend on the student’s master’s degree and previous course
work. For some students, their program of study could indicate as
few as 12 s.h. and for others, as many as 24 s.h. In no case
would the student take fewer than 12 s.h.

Admission Requirements
- Master’s degree in counseling or other related field.
- Three current letters of recommendation from individuals who have knowledge of the applicant’s counseling
skills.
- A detailed resume of professional, clinical and related experiences.
- A minimum grade point average of 3.0 for graduate work; personal interview with the program faculty member.
Program Requirements - Semester Hours: (12-24)
Students can select courses under advisement from master’s level
Rehabilitation Counseling courses. Individual programs of study are
developed according to the student’s career goals for either the CRC or
the Mental Health Practitioner’s license.
Typical courses include the following: CRC Requirements
To sit for the CRC, such a candidate’s transcript must reflect a minimum of:
- One graduate course on the Theories and Techniques of Counseling
- Four graduate courses in Rehabilitation Counseling in the following areas (one from each area):
- Assessment
- Occupational Information or Job Placement
- Medical or Psychosocial Aspects of Disability
- Community Resources or Delivery of Rehabilitation Services
Applicants are typically advised in their selection of four (4) Rehabilitation Counseling courses
according to the above regimen.
In the future, Rehabilitation Counseling graduates will require added course work in addition to
their Rehabilitation Counseling masters as mandated by the New York State Mental Health
Practitioner’s Licensing exam. It is foreseen that Hofstra Rehabilitation Counseling graduates may
need to satisfy at least the following content areas not previously taken in the RC masters:
- Group Dynamics
- Human Growth and Development
- Research
- Psychopathology
- Foundations of Mental Health Counseling and Consultation
The following SOEAHS courses address these content areas respectively:
- COUN 277-Group Counseling, 3 s.h.
- MFT 204-Individual and Family Life Cycle Development, 3 s.h.
- RES 258-Understanding Research Methodology, 3 s.h.
- COUN 261-Understanding Psychopathology in Counseling, 3 s.h. or
- REHB 259-Medical Characteristics in Psychiatric Rehabilitation, 3 s.h.
- COUN 275 Issues of Mental Health and Consultation, 3 s.h. or
- REHB 253 Rehabilitation Approaches for Persons with Severe Mental Illness, 3 s.h.
Graduation Requirements:
- Satisfactory completion of all course requirements according to the student’s individual program
of study (12-24 s.h.)
- A minimum grade point average of 3.0 in overall graduate course work.
