Economics (Business), B.S. Major in


The B.S. major in business economics complements the students’ economics training with an introduction to the functional areas of business studies. This degree program is particularly suited to the need of students of economics who intend to seek employment in business organizations.

Program Requirements - Total Semester Hours: 124


Candidates for graduation must fulfill the following requirements:

1. At Least 124 Semester Hours and Cumulative 2.0 GPA


The successful completion of at least 124 semester hours and a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in work completed at Hofstra.

2. Liberal Arts - Semester Hours: 57


57 semester hours in liberal arts courses, excluding economics.

3. Residence Requirements


There are three requirements that must ordinarily be completed in residence at Hofstra: 15 semester hours in the major field of specialization, at least three semester hours in distribution course work toward each divisional distribution course requirement, and the last 30 semester hours. The 15 semester hours in the major and the resident distribution course requirement need not be included within the last 30 hours.

4. General Requirements


English - Semester Hours: 6


Distribution Requirements - Semester Hours: 33


Distribution requirements: 33 semester hours in distribution courses as described in the B.A. degree requirements in the Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences section of this Bulletin. Students should note that the distribution requirement for the natural sciences, mathematics/computer science division must be fulfilled by taking 3 semester hours in the natural sciences, in addition to the two math courses required for the major specialization, MATH 40, and 61 or 71.

Foreign Languages


Language requirement: LING 101, or completion of level 2 of a foreign language, or placement above level 2 of a foreign language.

5. Major Requirements


Economics - Semester Hours: 33


33 semester hours in economics. Required courses include ECO 1 (or 7), 2, 130, 132, 144, 150, and 184.  Students select additional electives from among the 100-level courses in economics for a total of 12 semester hours. GEOG 135 and 193 may be offered as economics electives. 

Mathematics - Semester Hours: 6


Mathematics requirement: students must take MATH 40, and MATH 61 or 71 in order to fulfill the distribution requirement for the natural sciences, mathematics/computer science division.

Statistics - Semester Hours: 3


Business courses - Semester Hours: 25


25 semester hours in business courses, including IT 14.  Academic credits for QM 1 can be applied toward the fulfillment of this requirement and the statistics requirement.  Business credits in excess of 25 semester hours cannot be applied toward the degree in business economics.
