New College B.A. Major in the Natural Sciences

Return to Program Information Return to: Program Information

New College offers students with an interest in the allied health professions the opportunity to earn a B.A. in the Natural Sciences in either a pre-medical study or a pre-physical therapy study track.  These rigorous tracks provide a specialized focus in the field of interest, while also enabling students to gain greater exposure to a variety of other related fields than is typically available within a natural science major.  Both  tracks draw on resources from other departments in the University, and students pursue their course of study in their specialization and across disciplines in close consultation with an adviser. Both tracks are designed to prepare qualified students for graduate study.

I. Pre-Medical Study Track - Semester Hours: 124 Minimum

Degree Requirements:  A minimum of 124 semester hours.
Note: Students enrolled in this program must fulfill all New College graduation requirements.

Required Courses - Semester Hours: 48

As follows:

Group 1: Biology - Semester Hours: 14

Group 3: Math and Physics - Semester Hours: 18*

In addition to the two required courses in Groups 1 and 2 above, students interested in the pre-medical program must take the following courses:

* Students must take the Physics sequence during the summer of their junior year.

  • MATH 71 - (MC) Analytic Geometry and Calculus I Semester Hours: 4
  • ** Students may take MATH 50 (4 s.h.) and MATH 71 (4 s.h) instead of MATH 71 (4 s.h.), and MATH 72 ( 4 s.h).

  • MATH 72 - (MC) Analytic Geometry and Calculus II Semester Hours: 4
  • ** Students may take MATH 50 (4 s.h.) and MATH 71 (4 s.h) instead of MATH 71 (4 s.h.), and MATH 72 ( 4 s.h).

  • PHYS 11A - (NS) General Physics Semester Hours: 4
  • ***Under advisement, instead of PHYS 11A (4 s.h.), PHYS 11B (1 s.h.), PHYS 12A (4 s.h.), and PHYS 12B (1 s.h.), students may take PHYS 1A (3 s.h.), PHYS 1B (1 s.h.), PHYS 2A (3 s.h.), and PHYS 2B (1 s.h.).

  • PHYS 11B - (NS) General Physics Laboratory Semester Hours: 1
  • ***Under advisement, instead of PHYS 11A (4 s.h.), PHYS 11B (1 s.h.), PHYS 12A (4 s.h.), and PHYS 12B (1 s.h.), students may take PHYS 1A (3 s.h.), PHYS 1B (1 s.h.), PHYS 2A (3 s.h.), and PHYS 2B (1 s.h.).
