Accounting

In most states, candidates for the CPA examination are required to have completed 150 semester hours of course work in order to be eligible for licensure. New York state currently requires 69 s.h. in business, of which 33 must be in accounting. This program, which is offered by the Department of Accounting, Taxation, and Legal Studies in Business, should enable students to meet this requirement in conjunction with the undergraduate courses they have already taken from an accredited institution. Students without a baccalaureate degree in accounting, business, or the equivalent of 36 credits in business are advised to consider the M.B.A. in professional accountancy, which will satisfy all educational eligibility requirements for licensure. Students are advised to check with other state boards of accountancy for eligibility requirements outside of New York state.

The following program requirements may be modified based upon a student’s prior academic course work. Previous course work is evaluated by the Graduate Programs Office of the Zarb School of business upon a student’s admission.

Program Requirements - Semester Hours: 30

M.S. in Accounting students who have a baccalaureate degree or the equivalent in a field other than accounting must also take ACCT 203, FIN 203, and LEGL 200. ACCT 203 and FIN 203 are prerequisite courses which must be taken prior to commencing the program. ACCT 203, FIN 203, and LEGL 200 may be waived if a student completed equivalent course(s) inclusive of all topics listed in the course title with a grade of at least B- within the past five years.

Note

Students enrolled in Hofstra’s B.B.A./M.S. dual degree program should not take ACCT 216 - Tax Accounting  or ACCT 233 - Auditing Theory . Subject to evaluation of prior course work and approval of the Graduate Programs Office of the Zarb School of Business and the chairperson of the Department of Accounting, Taxation, and Legal Studies in Business, students may substitute graduate accounting or taxation electives, and in some cases graduate business electives, for up to four courses.

Taxation

The M.S. in Taxation program is designed to provide a broad background in tax law. The program can be tailored to meet the needs of certified public accountants and attorneys. Individuals who need to complete the 150-semester hour requirement in order to be eligible to take the CPA examination may major in taxation rather than accounting.
