B.S. Specialization in Applied Physics

This program meets the demands of industry for people with broad theoretical knowledge in physics, related sciences and engineering, combined with technical subject matter. The curriculum includes required courses in English as well as electives in humanities and social science to give the student a general background to supplement training as a specialist. Grades of C- or better are required in all physics courses and technical electives.

Program Requirements


Candidates for graduation must fulfill the following requirements:

1. Total Semester Hours: at least 124


The successful completion of at least 124 semester hours and a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in work completed at Hofstra.

2. Liberal Arts


At least 65 semester hours must be in liberal arts courses outside of the Department of Physics.

3. Residence Requirements


There are two requirements that must ordinarily be completed in residence at Hofstra: 15 semester hours in the major field of specialization and the last 30 semester hours. The 15 semester hours need not be included within the last 30 hours.

4. General Requirements


  • six hours of humanities electives
  • six hours in social science electives

5. One of the Following Three Concentrations


Each requires 24 sh of course work beyond the common core.

(a) Concentration in Engineering


  • 3 s.h. of advanced PHYS or ASTR
  • 3 s.h. of advanced PHYS lab and completion of a minor in  ENGG – 3 s.h. of which should be an integrative capstone project
  • Students in the Engineering concentration should take ENGG 10 in place of CSC 15

(b) Concentration in Computer Science


  • 3 s.h. of advanced PHYS or ASTR
  • 3 s.h. of advanced PHYS lab and completion of a minor in  CSC – 3 s.h. of which should be an integrative capstone project
  • Students in the Computer Science concentration should take CSC 15 in place of ENGG 10

(c) Concentration in Biochemistry


  • 4 s.h. of BIO
  • 2 s.h. of BIO or advanced PHYS or CHEM
  • 3 s.h. of advanced PHYS lab, serving as a capstone project
