Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: School of Health Sciences and Human Services

Qualified undergraduate students may elect to enroll in a dual-degree program, combining their undergraduate B.A. in speech-language-hearing sciences with an M.A. in speech-language pathology. The dual-degree program requires successful completion of a minimum of 160 semester hours, including at least 108 semester hours at the undergraduate level and 52 semester hours at the graduate level. The dual-degree program can be completed in five and one-half years. Students who are admitted to the M.A. portion of the dual-degree program may substitute a maximum of 16 semester hours of graduate-level course work for an equal number of semester hours of undergraduate course work toward the completion of their bachelor’s degree.

Direct admission to the dual-degree program (B.A. and M.A.)

Students entering Hofstra as incoming first-year students may apply for direct admission to this dual-degree program. Students admitted directly to the dual-degree program as incoming first-year students will be admitted automatically to the M.A. program at the end of their junior year, provided that they fulfill the following requirements:

  1. Attain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.7.
  2. Completion of 30 s.h. of major requirements (at least 24 s.h. must be in-residence), including SPCH 005A , 006 , 009 , 101A , 102A , 103 , 131 , 132 , 137 , and PSY 040 .
  3. Completion of 10 hours of clinical observations.
  4. Acceptable GRE scores.
  5. Recommendation of faculty advisor and approval of graduate program director.

Admission to the dual-degree program for current Hofstra students

Qualified Hofstra students majoring in speech-language-hearing sciences may apply for admission to the dual-degree program no later than the fall semester of their sophomore year, or with permission of the graduate program director. Students must also complete all the requirements listed in the “direct admission” entry above.

Once admitted to the graduate program, the student must maintain a minimum graduate GPA of 3.0 in order to remain in the program.

Program Requirements

Students admitted to this dual-degree program will receive a B.A. in speech-language-hearing sciences upon completion of the following requirements:

  1. The complete B.A. requirements  described in the Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences section of the Bulletin.
    1. In particular: successful completion of a total of 124 semester hours, including at least 108 semester hours of undergraduate course work and a maximum of 16 semester hours of graduate level course work.
  2. The specific major requirements described in the B.A. major in Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences  section of this Bulletin.

Upon successful completion of all graduate-level academic and clinical course work, students will be awarded an M.A. in Speech-Language Pathology.

Students may elect to complete either Option I or Option II of the master’s program. Option I is intended for students who seek ASHA certification and New York state licensure as a speech-language pathologist in clinical, hospital, rehabilitation, and private practice settings. Option II is for students who plan to work in educational settings, and seek ASHA certification and New York state licensure as a speech-language pathologist.
