Distinguished Academic Scholarships 

The following full-tuition scholarships are available to students with outstanding academic achievement, regardless of financial need. All applicants with superior high school records and standardized test scores are automatically considered by the University.

Undergraduate Endowed Scholarships

Donor endowed scholarships have been created by alumni and friends of Hofstra University. These scholarships are awarded annually according to various criteria established by the donor. Demonstration of financial need is determined by filing the FAFSA. Donor endowed scholarships are renewable according to University policy and academic standards as well as the criteria established for that particular scholarship. All or a portion of your academic scholarships/grants may be underwritten by the donor funds given by generous alumni and friends of the University. If this is the case, you will be notified.

  • 1-800-Flowers.com Endowed Scholarship: awarded to a deserving stu­dent selected on the basis of scholastic achievement or potential and demonstrated financial need. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • 60th Anniversary Endowed Scholarship: awarded to a deserving student(s) selected on the basis of demonstrated academic achievement and/or financial need. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Frank W. Abrams Endowed Scholarships: awarded to qualified students selected on the basis of academic excellence and financial need. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Nathalie Ackerman Endowed Theater Arts Scholarship: awarded to a de­serving student majoring in Theater Arts, entering his or her senior year, who has exhibited great talent on stage or off (performance or writing), has a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, and has financial need. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid upon the rec­ommendation of the Chairperson of the Drama and Dance Department (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • John Cranford Adams Endowed Scholarship: awarded to outstanding full-time students who have completed at least 58 semester hours; 50 hours must be in residence. This scholarship, established by the Hofstra Alumni Association to honor President Emeritus John Cranford Adams, may be renewed. Each recipient is named a John Cranford Adams Schol­ar. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Louise and Joel Adams Endowed Scholarship: awarded to a student planning a pre-med course of study or studying in the biological sciences. Selected on the basis of demonstrated economic need as well as scholas­tic achievement and potential.   • Pat Adamski & Ted Burrows Endowed Scholarship: awarded to a deserv­ing student(s) selected on the basis of demonstrated academic achievement and/or financial need. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Bettina Palma Affisco Memorial Endowed Scholarship: awarded to a student promoting education in Italian American culture and demon­strating academic achievement and/or financial need as well as service to school and community. First preference will be given to a qualified Music major. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Dr. Eugene J. Agnello Endowed Memorial Scholarship in Chemistry: awarded to a student(s) in his/her junior year who has declared a major in Chemistry and selected on the basis of academic potential or achieve­ment in Organic Chemistry. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Chris Albrecht Endowed Scholarship for the School of Communication: awarded to a deserving student, studying in The Lawrence Herbert School of Communication, selected on the basis of academic achievement and/or financial need. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid upon the recommendation of the Dean of The Lawrence Herbert School of Communication.
  • Natalie I. Allon Endowed Scholarship: awarded to qualified, deserving undergraduate students majoring in Sociology, and selected on the basis of academic excellence and financial need. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid upon the recommendation of the Sociology Department. Contact the Sociology Department to apply.
  • Alpha Psi Omega Honorary Endowed Scholarship: granted to four qual­ified Drama majors or minors (to freshmen for their sophomore year, to sophomores for their junior year, to juniors for their senior year, and to a student in the area of Theater Production in honor of Dr. Swinney). Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid upon the recommendation made by graduating seniors of Alpha Psi Omega, contingent on the approval of the faculty adviser (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Alpha Theta Beta Alumnae Endowed Scholarship: awarded to a qualified undergraduate student who has completed three semesters as an active sister of the Sorority and is based on academic achievement and participa­tion in extracurricular activities.   • Dr. Ronald J. Alvarez, P.E. Civil Engineering Endowed Scholarship: award to a deserving undergraduate student(s) enrolled in an ABET-accredited degree program leading to a Bachelor of Engineering in En­gineering Science, Civil Option, and who demonstrates (1) academic achievement or potential and/or (2) financial need and/or (3) contribution to the Engineering Department. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid upon the recommendation of the Chairperson of the Engineering Depart­ment and the Director of the Professional Engineering Review Program (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Paul D. Anderson Endowed Scholarship: awarded to a deserving student selected on the basis of academic achievement or potential and demon­strated financial need. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Dean Anthony Endowed Memorial Scholarship: awarded to deserving undergraduate Radio, Television, Film majors who have expressed a genuine interest in radio broadcasting and who will be selected based on academic achievement or potential and demonstrated financial need. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid upon the recommendation of the Dean of The Lawrence Herbert School of Communication in consultation with the Chairper­son of the Radio, Television, Film Department. 
  • Association for a Better Long Island Endowed Scholarship: awarded to a deserving student selected on the basis of demonstrated academic achieve­ment and/or financial need. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Joseph G. Astman Endowed Scholarship: awarded to a qualified stu­dent(s) selected on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic achievement or potential. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Astoria Bank Endowed Scholarship: awarded to a qualified undergraduate student who is a resident of Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau or Suffolk Counties, and selected on the basis of scholastic achievement or poten­tial as well as demonstrated economic need. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Stephen M. Balber Endowed Scholarship: awarded to a deserving stu­dent selected on the basis of scholastic demonstrated academic achievement and/or financial need. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Ballweg Family Endowed Scholarship: awarded to one or more qualified students selected on the basis of demonstrated economic need as well as scholastic achievement or potential. Recipient(s) must maintain an aggre­gate grade point average of 3.0. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Baker Tilly/William J. Holtz and Paul Rubenstein Endowed Scholarship: awarded to two full-time students beginning in their junior year at Hofstra who are Accounting majors with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or greater.   • Edna T. and Henry Bang Endowed Memorial Scholarship: awarded to a qualified student(s) selected on the basis of academic achievement or potential and finan­cial need. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Donald Nelson Barnes Endowed Memorial Scholarship: awarded to one or more deserving students who are majoring in Drama and selected on the basis of demonstrated academic achievement or potential and economic need. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid upon the recommendation of the Chairperson of the Drama and Dance Department (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • BDO Seidman Endowed Scholarship in Accounting: awarded to a deserv­ing student(s), majoring in Accounting, on the basis of academic achieve­ment and/or financial need. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Bengt Barbaccia Endowed Memorial Scholarship: awarded to a qualified junior or senior student-athlete who is a member of the Men’s Lacrosse team, and selected on the basis of active community service, leadership capacity, overall athletic and scholastic accomplishments, demonstrated economic need as well as scholastic achievement or potential. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid upon the recommendation by the Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Janice and Jeffrey Beekman Endowed Scholarship: awarded to one or more qualified undergraduate students who are Juniors, Seniors or transfer into Hofstra University’s Zarb School of Business and major in Business and: Have a preferred minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 in any discipline at transfer; Have actively participated in business and community service related extracurricular activities and held leadership positions; Have written an essay explaining their career aspirations and interests in business. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid upon the recommendation of the Dean of the Zarb School of Business. 
  • John F. Beiter Endowed Scholarship: awarded to a deserving student who is a member of the Wrestling team and has a B+ (3.3) cumulative grade point average. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid upon the recommendation of the Director of Athletics (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Caryl J. Benjamin Endowed Scholarship: awarded to a deserving stu­dent residing in the Village of Hempstead and selected on the basis of scholastic achieve­ment or potential as well as demonstrated economic need. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Eugene Bennett NOAH Endowed Scholarship: awarded to one or more deserving students on the basis of demonstrated financial need as well as scholastic achievement or potential. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid upon the recommendation of the Executive Director of the NOAH Program (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Joshua H. Bennett, Jr. Endowed Memorial Scholarship: dedicated to the men and women who gave their lives in service to this country. Awarded to one or more qualified students who are selected on the basis of dem­onstrated economic need as well as scholastic achievement or potential. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Richard T. Bennett Endowed Scholarship: awarded to a deserving student(s) selected on the basis of demonstrated academic achievement and/or demonstrated financial need. Awarded by the Office of Fi­nancial Aid (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Herman A. Berliner Endowed Scholarship: awarded to one or more students selected on the basis of demonstrated economic need as well as academic achievement.   • Marvin I. Bernstein Endowed Communication Scholarship: awarded to a qualified senior student enrolled in The Lawrence Herbert School of Communication, Department of Journalism, Media Studies, and Public Relations, and selected on the basis of demonstrated economic need as well as scholastic achievement of potential. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid upon the recom­mendation of the Dean of The Lawrence Herbert School of Communication.   • Harriette and Bernyce Berman Endowed Scholarship: awarded to one or more returning students who have or have had a personal challenge in dealing with cancer, through his/her own condition or that of a family member, or whose demonstrated service and commitment to the preven­tion and cure of cancer is exemplary. If no student meets these criteria, the scholarship will be awarded to one or more deserving students se­lected on the basis of demonstrated financial need as well as academic achievement. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid with input from the Director of Student Leadership & Activities.
  • Irene and Ralph Bettum Endowed Scholarship at the Frank G. Zarb School of Business: awarded to a qualified junior student enrolled in the Frank G. Zarb School of Business and selected on the basis of academic achievement or potential and financial need. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Mark L. Bibi Family Endowed Scholarship: awarded to a deserving student selected on the basis of superior academic achievement and demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to a first year student from Westchester County (NY) or Long Island, in this order. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Mark L. Bibi ‘80 Endowed Scholarship for Study Abroad: awarded to student(s) applying for the Hofstra University Study Abroad Program who have properly completed and submitted a scholarship application and supporting documents that show financial need and academic merit.  This application is to include a personal essay and letter of recommendation.  The scholarship application is submitted by the usual study abroad application deadline (early November for January programs, early March for summer programs.)  There will be an interview process for applicants.
  • Ronald & Henrie (Honey) Blau Endowed Scholarship: awarded to a deserving student(s) selected on the basis of demonstrated academic achievement and financial need. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Courtney Paige Boccio Endowed Scholarship: awarded to one or more deserving students selected on the basis of demonstrated academic achievement or potential and/or financial need. Preference will be given to a student studying pre-med and who also has been challenged in life dealing with a serious illness such Cystic Fibrosis or another debilitating disease (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • William Bonomo Endowed Scholarship: this sport-specific endowed scholarship is awarded to a member of the Men’s Basketball team, selected on the basis of academic achievement or potential and demonstrated financial need. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid upon the recommendation of the Head Coach of the Men’s Basketball team and Director of Athletics (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Booster Alumni Endowed Spirit Scholarship: awarded to a returning student with a minimum 2.7 GPA who is an active member of the Spirit groups (Cheerleading, Dance Team, Mascots, and/or Pep Band) for at least one year. Recipient must have demonstrated school spirit, enthusiasm and participation in student spirit groups.   • Irene Bossert Endowed Scholarship for Upperclassmen in Chemistry: This scholarship is awarded to a Junior or Senior Chemistry major with a GPA of 3.0 or greater.  This scholarship is potentially renewable. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Irene Urwiler Bossert Endowed Scholarship: awarded to a deserving undergraduate student(s) who is a Chemistry major and selected on the basis of demonstrated academic achievement with preference given to women students to enhance the role of women in science. If no qualified Chemistry major can be identified, then the scholarship will be awarded to a qualified Biochemistry major with preference given to women students to enhance the role of women in science.   • S. Tapper Bragg II Memorial Endowed Scholarship for the Physically Challenged: awarded to qualified physically challenged student selected on the basis of demonstrated need as well as scholastic achievement or po­tential. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid upon the recommendation of the Director of the Program for the Higher Education of the Disabled (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Dr. Robert M. Braun Endowed Scholarship in Accounting: awarded to a qualified student, majoring in Accounting, selected on the basis of dem­onstrated economic need as well as scholastic achievement or potential. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid upon the recommendation of the Dean of the Frank G. Zarb School of Business.   • Dr. Eben Breed Endowed Scholarship: awarded to a deserving student(s) se­lected on the basis of demonstrated academic achievement and/or financial need. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • John W. Brennan Endowed Scholarship: awarded to a qualified physical­ly challenged student(s) selected on the basis of academic achievement (3.0 G.P.A.) and demonstrated financial need.   • David Brex and Grace Bayer Brex Endowed Scholarship: awarded to an undergraduate student(s) majoring in Mathematics and based on aca­demic achievement and demonstrated financial need. Awarded by the Of­fice of Financial Aid (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Broadridge Financial Solutions Endowed Scholarship: awarded to a deserving student(s) in the Frank G. Zarb School of Business and selected on the basis of demonstrated academic achievement and financial need, and upon the recommendation of the Director for the Center of International Financial Services and Markets and the Dean of the Frank G. Zarb School of Business. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Lou Bronzo Endowed Baseball Scholarship: awarded to a deserving stu­dent who is a member of the Baseball team, and selected on the basis of aca­demic achievement or potential and/or financial need. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid upon the recommendation of the Director of Athletics (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Professor Vincent Brown Memorial Endowed Scholarship: awarded to a deserving undergraduate student (s) studying Psychology and selected on the basis of demonstrated academic achievement. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid upon on the recommendation of the Chair of the Psychology Department (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Burghardt Family Endowed Scholarship for Women in Engineering: awarded to a deserving undergraduate female engineering student(s) enrolled in a BS or BE degree in the Department of Engineering, who is returning to college or starting college after delays for work or family, and who demonstrates (1) financial need and/or (2) academic achievement or potential and/or (3) contribution to the Engineering Department. Awarded upon the recommendation of the chairperson of the Engineering Department (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Barbara and Peter Bye Endowed Scholarship: awarded to a deserving student selected on the basis of demonstrated academic achievement or potential and financial need (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Julia Cagnazzi Endowed Memorial Scholarship: awarded to a junior or senior woman student, enrolled in the Frank G. Zarb School of Business, majoring in Information Systems and has a G.P.A of 3.0 or better. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • President Calkins Endowed Scholarship: awarded to a deserving stu­dent(s) selected on the basis of demonstrated academic achievement or potential and/or financial need. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Albert D. and Mildred Beckman Capuro Endowed Scholarship: awarded to one or more deserving students selected on the basis of financial need and academic achievement or potential. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Richard and Lynn Cardozo (Class of 1964) Endowed Scholarship for Business: awarded to one or more deserving students studying business and may be renewed for up to four years as long as the recipient(s) continue to meet the criteria.   • Richard and Lynn Cardozo (Class of 1964) Endowed Scholarship for Education: awarded to one or more deserving students studying Education and may be renewed for up to four years as long as the recipient(s) continue to meet the criteria. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Stephen B. Carlin and Walter W. Rudolph Endowed Scholarship: awarded to a qualified student(s) selected on the basis of academic achievement and/or financial need and participation in co-curricular activities. First preference given to a direct descendent of an honorably-discharged “in country” Vietnam War veteran of the U.S. Armed Services; second preference for a student who is, or is the direct descendent of, an honorably discharged veteran of the U.S Armed Services with “in-country” service in Afghanistan or Iraq since 1991; and third preference for a student who is, or is a direct descendent of, an honorably-discharged veteran of the U.S. Armed Services. This award may be used for costs other than tuition and is awarded by the Office of Financial Aid upon the rec­ommendation of the Carlin/Rudolph Scholarship Committee.   • Jason Cefalu Endowed Memorial Scholarship: awarded to deserving students who are selected on the basis of academic achievement or po­tential and demonstrated financial need. First preference will be given to children or spouses of victims of the September 11, 2001, tragedies. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • The Center for Civic Engagement Endowed Scholarship: awarded to a deserving student(s) who is selected on the basis of demonstrated academic achievement and/or financial need. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid upon the recommendation of the Director of the Center for Civic Engagement (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Keith Cerrato Endowed Scholarship: awarded to a deserving student(s) selected on the basis of demonstrated academic achievement and financial need. The recipient must maintain a 3.0 G.P.A. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Matthew Chappell-Herman Goldberg Endowed Memorial Scholarship: award­ed to an undergraduate student(s) majoring in Psychology. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid upon recommendations made by the Faculty Committee of the Undergraduate Program in Psychology (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Laurence Charney ‘69 & Family Endowed Scholarship for Business: awarded to a deserving undergraduate/graduate business student(s), selected on the basis of academic achievement or potential and/or financial need. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • L.N. Charney International Business Fellows Scholarship: awarded to one or more deserving Frank G. Zarb School of Business students selected on the basis of demonstrated academic achievement (3.2 GPA or higher) and/or financial need.  Students will submit a written essay explaining the importance of an international experience in preparation for a business career. Recipients are selected upon the recommendation of the Dean of the Frank G. Zarb School of Business.
  • Cheerleading Endowed Scholarship: awarded to one or more members of the Cheerleading team who have been members for at least two years, showing leadership and athletic skills which are exemplary, and are re­spected by peers. A minimum aggregate GPA of 2.5 is required. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid upon the recommendation of a committee from the Office of Student Leadership & Activities (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Brian Christenson Endowed Scholarship: awarded to a deserving student(s) selected on the basis of demonstrated academic achievement and/or financial need, with preference given to a student(s) majoring in Radio, Television, Film, or Journalism. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Chronicle Endowed Scholarship: granted to one or more students who have exemplified the spirit and bond that can only be discovered through association with print media students. Recipient(s) must have served for a minimum of one year in a leadership or significant capacity of the publication and viewed as a respected and admired leader by the student staff. A minimum aggregate GPA of 2.5 is required. Zarb Endowed Scholarship: awarded to a deserving under­graduate or graduate student enrolled in the Zarb School of Business, selected on the basis of demonstrated academic achievement and/or fi­nancial need.   • Patricia K. Zarb and Frank G. Zarb Endowed Scholarship: awarded to full time students who maintain a minimum 3.3 G.P.A. and are of good character, and will be awarded in the following order of preference: 1)  eligible students who are serving or have served honorably with a law enforcement agency or first-responder agency such as municipal police or fire departments or emergency medical services; 2) eligible students who have served on active duty in and are honorably discharged from the United States Armed Services or are still on active duty in the United States Armed Services and have records of good standing; 3) eligible Veterans who have served on active duty for at least three years; 4) children of Veterans who have served on active duty in the United States Armed Services and are honorably discharged.
  • Patricia Koster Zarb Endowed Scholarship: awarded to a deserving undergraduate student who is selected on the basis of demonstrated financial need and scholastic achievement or po­tential. Preference is to be given to a qualified first-year student with a high school G.P.A. of B+ or better. If no freshman can be identified, this scholarship may be awarded to a qualified sophomore.   • Patricia Koster Zarb Endowed Scholarship in Journalism: awarded to a deserving student(s), selected on the basis of academic achievement and financial need, who is studying Journalism and has a demonstrated commitment to fair and unbiased reporting.   • Zarb Family Endowed Scholarship in the Frank G. Zarb School of Busi­ness: awarded to a deserving undergraduate student, majoring in busi­ness and selected on the basis of demonstrated financial need and aca­demic achievement, who has shown both leadership and initiative. The scholarship is renewable until graduation provided the recipient main­tains at least a “C” (2.0) average.   • Frank G. Zarb School of Business Alumni Association Endowed Schol­arship: awarded to a qualified Frank G. Zarb School of Business stu­dent selected on the basis of demonstrated financial need as well as academic achievement and potential. Awarded by the Office of Finan­cial Aid upon the recommendation of the Dean of the Frank G. Zarb School of Business (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Frank G. Zarb School of Business Emeriti Faculty Endowed Scholar­ships: in honor of emeriti faculty of the Frank G. Zarb School of Busi­ness. Awarded to deserving students in the Zarb School of Business selected on the basis of scholastic achievement or potential and demonstrated financial need. Awarded by the Office of Finan­cial Aid (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).
  • Frank G. Zarb School of Business Endowed Scholarship: awarded to a qualified student(s) enrolled in the Frank G. Zarb School of Business and selected on the basis of scholastic achievement or potential as well as demonstrated economic need.   • Julie Lynn Zipper Endowed Memorial Scholarship: awarded to deserving students selected on the basis of academic achievement or potential and demonstrated financial need. First preference will be given to children or spouses of victims of the September 11, 2001, tragedies. Awarded by the Offi ce of Financial Aid (no separate application, awarded automatically to eligible students).

Honors, Prizes and Awards

A number of special prizes and awards are presented to Hofstra students by organizations, friends of the University and members of the Univer­sity community. These prizes and awards are in addition to the regular forms of financial aid available to students. 

  • Donald Everett Axinn Humanities Endowed Award: award is used to support the Humanities, which may include supporting faculty, students, and/or programs.
  • Lilo and Peter Buehrle Endowed Award: granted to two (2) or more de­serving students who have demonstrated excellence in either Advanced German language or in research on the German culture. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid upon the recommendation of the faculty of the Comparative Literature and Languages Department. 
  • Harold E. Clearman Endowed Memorial Award: awarded to a student majoring in Physics who has achieved meritorious performance in coursework, along with an outstanding individual research project, as recommended by the faculty of the Physics and Astronomy Department. 
  • Faculty Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Education: one or more prizes of $100 granted to qualified student(s) who have complet­ed at least three semesters at Hofstra University, including at least one 100-level Mathematics course. Recipient(s) are selected on the basis of scholastic achievement and their intention to enter teaching at the el­ementary or secondary level. Awards may be granted annually at the dis­cretion of the faculty of the Mathematics Department.  
  • Michael Gordon Prize in the Fine Arts: awarded to one or more students whose paintings, drawings or sculptures best exemplifies Professor Gor­don’s view that form is the essence of art. 
  • Guru Nanak Interfaith Endowed Prize: to be awarded to individuals or organizations who have made significant contributions in promoting re­ligious dialogue; made efforts to end religious and ethnic violence; and/or who have the ability to use the prize to further the cause of religious dialogue. 
  • Thomas Hetzel Endowed Memorial Award in German Studies: awarded to a deserving student studying abroad in Germany through a Hofstra-sponsored program or other accredited American university program ap­proved by the Director of the German Program. The recipient will be selected based on the following criteria: (1) GPA in German courses, (2) cumulative Hofstra GPA, (3) potential for success in the field of German Studies (4) demonstrated financial need, or (5) demonstrated commit­ment to public service. If for any academic year, no student elects to study abroad, the award will be presented as a tuition scholarship to the most outstanding student selected from the following pool of candidates – German majors, German minors, and students taking German classes based on the same criteria as stated above. The award will be granted upon the recommendation of the Director of the German Program in con­sultation with the Chairperson of the Comparative Literature and Lan­guages Department.
  • History Department Endowed Award: awarded to a deserving student studying Greek and Roman History, and selected on the basis of demon­strated economic need as well as scholastic achievement or potential.  
  • Jeffrey C. Kraus Radio Memorial Endowed Award: award will be granted to a deserving student(s) who has a minimum G.P.A. of 2.5 and has been actively involved with radio studies or radio production. Preference will be given to a Radio major and/or a student(s) who has demonstrated involvement at WRHU-FM for a minimum of two years. Award recipients must be enrolled at Hofstra University during the semester following the announcement of their awards.   • Adele Leonard Endowed Prize for Excellence in Linguistics: in memory of Adele Leonard, who was Director of the Nassau County Civil Ser­vice Commission for 26 years. This prize is awarded to a student for excellence in Linguistics, in particular for innovative approaches to the analysis of language as judged by the Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Linguistics faculty. 
  • The Rhoda Pinsley Levin Endowed Award for Excellence in Musical Performance, presented annually, is named in memory of the celebrated pianist, teacher and music patron, who was active in the Hofstra community.  It honors accomplished senior undergraduate performing musicians, provides financial assistance for related scholarly or vocational pursuits, and enables recitals featuring the award recipients each year. The award was created by Mrs. Levin’s husband, the late Harvey J. Levin, a longtime Hofstra economics and research professor and pioneering, internationally influential economist.
  • Allison Kim Levy Continuing Acts of Kindness Endowed Memorial Award: Through a generous donation from the family and friends of alumna Allison Kim Levy, two annual awards are available in recognition of outstanding community activity and good works performed by students, faculty and staff of the University in behalf of their communities. All members of the Hofstra community are eligible for this award, including undergraduate and graduate students, staff and members of the faculty. Each award includes a certificate of recognition and a $1000 prize. The call for nominations will be announced in early February for work conducted during the previous calendar year and awards will be announced at the annual awards ceremony of the National Honor Society in Psychology each May. A committee consisting of the Director of the PsyD Program in School-Community Psychology, a secretary from a doctoral program in Psychology, and the undergraduate student President of Psi Chi, the National Honor Society in Psychology, will designate winners and notify the Office for Development of their selections.  
  • Irving and Ina Markowitz Endowed Prize in Asian History: a prize of $200 made through the Department of History and awarded for outstand­ing performance in Asian History. 
  • James A. Moore Endowed Memorial Award: awarded to a student, majoring in Physics, with the highest quality performance excelling in course work, individual research and service to the Physics community as recommended by the faculty of the Physics and Astronomy Department. 
  • Pro Health Care Associates Endowed Student Athlete Senior Award: awarded to two senior student-athletes, one male and one female, who have maintained a minimum cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0 and who are not receiving full athletic scholarship aid from the University. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid upon the recommendation of the Director of Athletics. 
  • Q-8 Alumni Association Walter A. Klein Memorial Endowed Award: granted to a Hofstra University student with a minimum 2.5 GPA, who is an active member of the Pershing Rifles Company Q-8 in good standing as verified by the Military Science Department and/or the Pershing Rifle Company Q-8 Alumni Association. Preference will be given to non-scholarship ROTC cadets. This award is renewable as long as the student remains in good-standing and may be applied to housing and/or books.   • Herbert D. Rosenbaum/Pi Sigma Alpha Endowed Political Science Award: a portion is awarded to a student, majoring in Political Science, who has written the best paper during the academic year as determined by the faculty of the Political Science Department. The balance of the scholarship will be awarded to one or more deserving students majoring in political science on the basis of financial need, demonstrated academic excellence, and service to the Political Science Department. Preference will be given to students who have earned at least nine political science credits at Hofstra.   • Donald M. Rowe Merit Award for Performing Excellence as a Piano Ac­companist: an honorarium of $250 granted to a student majoring in Mu­sic or Music Education, which, if possible, is presented in conjunction with the recipient’s senior recital. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid upon the recommendation of the faculty of the Music Department.  
  • Robert Sobel Endowed Award for Excellence in Business, Finance and Economic History: awarded every other year, beginning in 2009-2010, to a junior or senior student(s) who has written a substantial essay on a subject related to the business, financial, or broader economic history of the United States. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid upon the recommendation of the Dean of the Hofstra College of Liberal Arts & Sciences in consultation with the Chairperson of the History Department. 
  • Department of Sociology-Undergraduate Endowed Award for Potential Sociologists and Social Justice: awarded to students at the recommendation of the Chair of the Sociology Department in consultation with Sociology Department faculty.
  • Manya and Max Tenenbaum Endowed Memorial Prize in Economics: awarded to undergraduate students for outstanding honors papers in Eco­nomics or Social Science Geography, with equal weight given to substantive content and to presentation and language. Should no paper be sufficiently meritorious, no award will be made that year. Recommendation will be made by a committee consisting of two members of the Economics/Geography Department selected by the Department Chairperson (the Chairperson may be one of those selected) for the lucidity and grace of their writing. Awarded by the Office of Financial Aid upon the recom­mendation of the Chairperson of the Economic/Geography Department. 
  • Lelia Kelly Thompson Endowed Award in Music: awarded to a music student in their senior year on the basis of demonstrated musical and academic achievement, upon the recommendation of the chair of the Music Department.
  • Betty Weed Endowed Prize: established in 1950 by Hofstra Trustee Leroy J. Weed in memory of his daughter, this prize is awarded annually to the Junior of the Year or to two Juniors, as selected by the Vice President for Student Affairs.This prize is not renewable.
