Under the Provost’s Office, the Center for University Advising supports Hofstra undergraduate students in the pursuit of their educational goals by assisting them in making informed academic decisions. The Center for University Advising provides general academic advising to current and prospective undergraduate students, both full- and part-time, from admission through graduation. All undergraduate students are assigned an advisor in University Advising. They serve as a general academic advisor throughout their time at Hofstra. In addition, when students declare a major, they will also work closely with a faculty advisor in their academic department for all concerns related to the major. Hofstra students who are continuing their studies during the summer may speak with their advisor in 101 Memorial Hall. Advisors will address non-major specific academic questions or concerns students may have about academic program planning, degree progress, academic policies, procedures, and deadlines. For major-specific questions in these areas, students should meet with their faculty advisor in their major department.
Visiting students may meet with an advisor to discuss any questions or concerns about their course selection for the Hofstra summer session. Students are responsible for consulting with their college or university for approval of transfer credits to meet home school degree requirements.
During the fall and spring semesters, the Center for University Advising is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Students with quick five-minute questions can come to quick Question hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. or Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. For further information or to set up an appointment, students can call University Advising at 516-463-6770 or email Advising@hofstra.edu.
During the summer, beginning May 16, the Center for University Advising is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m, and Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Advisors in University Advising are available during the summer on an appointment-only basis.
Continuing Education students, once admitted to one of the certificate programs in accounting, finance, general management, human resources management, international business, labor studies, marketing, information technology, or the post-baccalaureate premedical program, should go to the academic department administering their certificate program for advisement questions or concerns.
Hofstra University Libraries’ collections are housed in four locations on campus. The Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library on the south campus, our main library, houses circulating book and journal collections, the Harold E. Yuker Reference Library, Special Collections, and Curriculum Materials Center. The Film and Media Library is in Memorial Hall. The Hofstra Law Library is located in the Seryl and Charles Kushner Hall of the Maurice A. Deane School of Law. The Health Sciences Library is located in the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. The University Libraries’ collections include approximately 1 million print volumes and extensive online resources and non-print media.
The Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library: The main 11-story library building located at the south end of the Unispan across Hempstead Turnpike houses the circulating book collection (floors 4-8), the Harold E. Yuker Reference Library on the main floor, the Periodicals Reading Room, Special Collections and the Curriculum Materials Center on the ground level. There are group study rooms on floors 4-8 available on a first-come, first-served basis; keys may be checked out at the Circulation Desk on the main floor. Additionally, there are rooms on the ground and second floors that can be reserved in advance. Carrels for private study are available in the Reference Reading Room on the main floor. Group study areas are available on the main floor and ground level. Two student lounges and areas for group study are available on the second floor and on the ground level, and the ground-level lounge includes an open-access reading collection and an art gallery for student work. There is a computer lab and a 24-hour study area across the east lobby on the main floor. Access to online information databases is available throughout the library via a wireless network and wired workstations. The Axinn Library houses these additional collections:
The Harold E. Yuker Reference Library: Located on the main floor of the Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library, the Yuker Reference Library offers a comprehensive reference collection of more than 30,000 combined print and electronic sources. The Yuker Reference Library is fully WI-Fi enabled and laptop-friendly. Additionally, full-service stationary computers are available, along with printing stations, comfortable seating, and study tables. The Reference Reading Room offers a quiet setting with private study carrels for students to pursue their scholarships. Reference librarians provide walk-up reference services as well as research support via Chat, text, email, and telephone. Reference faculty also offer private, one-on-one research consultations by appointment. Other library services include speedy interlibrary loans, online print book reservation and renewal, and scanning and electronic delivery of print journal articles.
The Curriculum Materials Center, located on the lower level of Axinn Library, is geared toward the needs of students and faculty in Hofstra’s School of Education. The collection consists of both print and non-print items. Print materials include curriculum guides, textbooks, professional books, children’s and young adult literature, and periodicals. Nonprint items include software, DVDs, and a variety of games, kits, puppets, and manipulatives. The collection covers pre-kindergarten through grade 12 in every subject area, as well as materials related to special education and counseling.
The John W. Wydler Government Documents Depository provides access to a wide variety of electronic government information from the federal government as well as the New York State government.
Special Collections: Located on the lower level of Axinn Library, it is composed of three separate divisions with their own print and manuscript collections. All these materials are available to faculty, students, and the general public for use within the library and have separate finding aids and shelf lists:
Long Island Studies Institute: Houses significant collections for the study of Long Island’s history from before the American Revolution to the present, including books, periodicals, photographs, newspapers, maps, census records, and archival collections.
Rare Books and Manuscripts: Collections include the art and history of the book, the history, and teaching of reading, the rise of Nazi propaganda in Germany, the Weingrow Dada and Surrealist Collection, as well as the Avant-Garde Art, Poetry and Literature Collection, examples of rare books from different centuries and a variety of private presses.
University Archives: Maintains the historical non-circulating records of Hofstra University, including materials documenting various events on campus, official publications, newsletters and bulletins, audio and videotapes, photographs, and papers of selected members of the Hofstra community.
The Hofstra Electronic Library provides 24/7 online access from campus or home to 257 research databases, over 200,000 full-text electronic journals, and 800,000 electronic books via the Internet. These online resources provide curricular support across all major academic disciplines and can be accessed through the University Libraries Web page.
The Film and Media Library provides faculty and students with video content supporting classroom instruction and student projects. The collection of approximately 80,000 streaming videos and 10,000 VHS and DVDs may be searched through the online catalog. In-house facilities for the use of these DVDs and VHS tapes include individual carrels and small-group rooms.
The Health Sciences Library: Located on the second floor of the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, this library provides access to more than 40,000 current online journals, more than 54,000 online books, 60 databases specific to the health sciences, and a curriculum focused print book collection. The library is open 24/7 for use by medical school students, faculty, and staff. The space includes study carrels, individual study rooms, computer workstations, and areas for collaborative learning. The library staff provides information literacy training, supports systematic review research, and tracks the scholarly publications of all medical school faculty and students.
The Hofstra Law Library: The Hofstra Law Library contains more than 540,000 volumes and provides online access to a variety of research databases.

The Joan and Arnold Saltzman Community Services Center provide a multifaceted program of social services that consists of two independent but complementary components:
The Diane Lindner-Goldberg Child Care Institute serves children from eight weeks to five years of age. In cooperation with the School of Education and other academic departments, the program offers a nurturing curriculum for young children. The Institute is open to all members of the Hofstra family as well as to the general community, Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. While the program is predominately full-time, there are a few part-time slots available for Hofstra students, staff, and faculty. Information Technology Services

Information Technology Services (ITS) collaborates with our community to support Hofstra’s higher education mission and foster innovation and productivity through secure, reliable, and adaptable services and solutions. Our division’s staff of 69 full-time professionals, along with a team of student employees, provides comprehensive technology and innovation services in support of the entire University.
These services include:
- Classroom and learning spaces
More than 200 technology-enhanced classrooms are available for teaching and learning, with 115 of these equipped with lecture capture technology. In addition, Hofstra has highly specialized labs and experiential learning spaces, including the Cybersecurity Innovation and Research Center, a high-performance computing lab for big data, a 34-terminal Bloomberg trading room, a 3D anatomy visualization classroom, a fine arts lab with high-end graphics software, communications labs for film and video production, a business behavioral research lab, and a multimedia lab featuring virtual reality and GIS software.
- Remote learning technologies
In addition to physical classrooms, ITS supports technologies that enable remote learning. These technologies make interactive and secure online learning possible using tools including Blackboard, Zoom, VoiceThread, Kaltura, Respondus, and Turnitin.
- Virtual and in-person lab computing
Students have access to a virtual lab computer and academic software from anywhere in the world using PrideDesktop, the University’s virtual desktop service, available on computers or tablet devices. On-campus, students have access to technology-enriched study and collaboration spaces, including individual and group study spaces in the Axinn Libraries, two open-access computer labs (one of which offers extended late-night hours), eateries, and other social spaces with high-speed Wi-Fi. Print release stations for the on-demand PridePrint service are located throughout campus in both academic and residential locations.
- High-performance Internet access
The University’s wireless network, eduroam, is available in every campus building, as well as many outdoor spaces. Students have access to Hofstra’s robust 10+ gigabit Internet connection and a gigabit connection to Internet2. Beyond Hofstra, our scholars enjoy a seamless Wi-Fi experience at thousands of other eduroam-enabled academic and research institutions in the United States and around the world.
The ITS Service Desk, located in room 125 Axinn Library East, provides support for the University’s technology resources to all members of the Hofstra community. Walk-in and telephone service are available Monday through Thursday between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. (5 p.m. when classes are not in session) and Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. The ITS Service Desk is closed on designated University holidays.
Student Counseling Services

Hofstra University Student Counseling Services provides psychological and educational counseling to students in an effort to facilitate meaningful personal growth and their fullest educational development. Individual and group counseling is available to enrolled students who are having difficulty with emotional, behavioral, adjustment, or academic concerns. The collaborative counseling process is used to clarify problems, establish realistic goals, and develop active short-term treatment solutions. Services are provided by a professional staff in a relaxed and confidential environment. Counseling is available to all students at no charge for a limited number of sessions. Center for Career Design & Development

The Center for Career Design & Development, located in Weller Hall, provides career development support services to all undergraduate students and graduate students except for those students in graduate programs in the Frank G. Zarb School of Business, Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University, and Northwell School of Medicine at Hofstra University. The Center for Career Design and Development educates and inspires students to create an individualized and evolving career path focused on exploration, preparation, and professional growth. We offer one-on-one advising services, in-person and online workshops to groups, career fairs, creative connections, and networking events to connect students to alumni and other professionals, field trips to companies, collaboration with departments and campus partners, and much more.
Career Advising Appointments: Career advising appointments can be made using Student Success Connect on the Hofstra student portal or by visiting or calling the Center for Career Design & Development at 516-463-6060. Advising sessions help students with career exploration, articulation, preparation, and connection throughout their time at Hofstra and after graduation. Career Assessment Services: Self-assessments are one of the first steps in career planning and are meant to assess your interests, skills, accomplishments, and work values. The Center for Career Design & Development at Hofstra University administers several assessments by appointment in our office. We encourage students to make an appointment for an appropriate assessment, whether they are deciding on a major, deciding what to do after college, or undergoing a career change. Job and Internship Services: thousands of job and internship notices from regional, national, and international employers are made available via the Handshake, UCAN, and Vault, accessed through the Hofstra Career Hub (http://hofstra.edu/careerhub). These specific announcements of current opportunities are supplemented by extensive online career resources listed on the Hofstra Career Hub, the centralized source for career resources at Hofstra.
On-Campus Recruitment: Each year, the Center for Career Design & Development hosts hundreds of employer visits for the purpose of interviewing students for internships or full-time jobs through various on-campus interview programs, education recruitment, networking events, or career fairs.
Special Events and Workshops: The Center for Career Design & Development offers a variety of special events throughout the year, covering a wide range of industries and topics, including various job fairs and career nights, major and career exploration, resume writing, job search skills, interview preparation, and professional skill development and etiquette. Students who are interested in working on campus while attending summer classes can take advantage of a large number of part- and full-time jobs that are available throughout the University. Jobs are posted on the University’s website. The Office of Student Employment, located in the Human Resources Center, across from the Student Center near the main entrance to North Campus, is available to assist you on a walk-in basis during regular business hours. Sondra and David S. Mack Student Center

In the summer, as well as during the rest of the year, the hub of student activities is the Sondra and David S. Mack Student Center. Located on the North Campus, the Mack Student Center is the main communication center for all students. To find out what’s happening on campus, stop by the Office of Student Leadership and Activities located in Room 260.
Students are welcome to stop by the Dean of Students Office located on the second floor with any questions or concerns. The Mack Student Center is a great place to meet people and becomes involved in campus life. Below are a few of the services available within the Student Center:
Bookstore: Located in the Sondra and David S. Mack Student Center, the Bookstore, operated by Barnes & Noble College Booksellers, provides a wide variety of merchandise and services. Look for textbooks (rental, used, new and digital), general reading books, Hofstra apparel and gifts, sundries, supplies, magazines, candy, and greeting cards. Post Office: Located on the lower level of the Mack Student Center is the Hofstra University Post Office, where students can purchase stamps or send packages. The summer hours are Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Also located within the Student Center is the Office for Student Leadership and Activities, student organization offices, the Chaplains, Residential Programs, the Office of Multicultural & International Student Programs, Off-Campus Living and Commuting Student Services, and Event Management.
David S. Mack Fitness Center

David S. Mack Public Safety and Information Center

The David S. Mack Public Safety and Information Center is located at the intersection of Hempstead Turnpike and California Avenue. It is the headquarters for the Department of Public Safety, which works 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to ensure the wellbeing of the Hofstra community. The Department of Public Safety provides information to the campus community through a dynamic website, an annual security report, and numerous training sessions related to campus safety. Individuals are encouraged to review this information so that they are familiar with emergency procedures while on campus, as well as the various services the Department of Public Safety provides to community members. A few such services are highlighted below:
- Annual Security and Fire Safety Report: The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report are published in compliance with the federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act and other federal laws. The report is intended to inform the campus community of University policies and procedures related to campus security, as well as to share statistics relating to crime and fire safety on campus for the three previous years. The reported incidents are categorized as having occurred on campus, in residence halls, and on public property, which is a property immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.
- Campus Alert Notification Network (CANN): CANN is a comprehensive notification structure to alert the campus community in the event of an emergency. Students and employees can sign up for CANN notifications online at My.Hofstra.edu by providing their personal telephone contact information. The CANN utilizes one or more of the following methods of communication:
- The public address system will broadcast emergency information
- Text and/or voice message is sent to a telephone number supplied by the campus community member
- Alert is posted on the campus alert page of the Hofstra website
- Alert is sent to the Hofstra community member’s Hofstra email account
- Emergency information is posted on the HOFCAST network
- Broadcasts via the Hofstra television service and Hofstra radio station (WHRU-88.7 FM)
- An instant message will be sent to all computers
- A recorded message is placed on the campus alert hotline, 516-463-1234
- Emergency Response Procedures and Plans: Information on emergency response procedures and plans are available at Hofstra Alert.
- Emergency Telephones: There are over 50 emergency telephones located throughout the campus that when activated immediately connect to the Hofstra Information Center dispatch.
- Lost and Found: Lost and Found is located in the Hofstra Information Center and is open 24 hours a day. Items can be claimed by producing proper identification.
- Parking/Vehicle Registration: Students, faculty, and staff are required to register their vehicles by logging into the Hofstra portal. There is no fee for this service and only one vehicle per person can be registered per academic year. After logging into the Hofstra portal individuals can click on the upper-right hand checkerboard to access the parking permit application. They will be asked to complete a series of questions related to the vehicle they intend to register for the academic year. Upon submission, individuals will receive an email that contains a copy of their parking permit. Faculty, staff, and commuting students will be asked to print the permit and insert it into a hang-tag holder that will be available throughout various academic departments on campus, as well as the Department of Public Safety. Resident students will simply need to print and prominently display their parking permit on the dashboard of their vehicle. - Student Escort: Student Escorts are available from dusk to dawn to walk any member of the Hofstra community to his or her car, residence hall, or academic building. Please call 516-463-6606 to request an escort.
- Transportation: Hofstra University provides various shuttle services to assist community members in accessing the campus and surrounding areas. The Hofstra shuttle provides transportation to the Hempstead and Mineola Long Island Rail Road stations. There is also an entertainment shuttle that provides rides to and from local shopping centers and dining and entertainment venues. Finally, the Hofstra Night Shuttle provides daily service between 9:30 p.m. and 5 a.m. to campus community members traveling to neighborhoods adjacent to Hofstra’s campus. (The Hofstra Night Shuttle can be tracked via mobile device by downloading the Hofstra mobile app and selecting the ‘Night Shuttle’ icon or if on a desktop computer, it can be accessed by logging in to the portal and clicking the ‘Night Shuttle’ icon in “My Apps”.) For schedules and information, visit Hofstra Shuttle. Campus shuttle schedules are subject to change when there are changes in the train schedule or for any unforeseeable circumstances.

Café Bistro at Bits ‘n’ Bytes: Located on the south campus, offers a wide range of food concepts, such as a made-to-order grill station, a chopped salad area, house-made pizza, and a wonderful assortment of grab-and-go salads, sandwiches, wraps, and fresh fruit. Red Mango, located within the Bistro, offers probiotic frozen yogurt and smoothies.
Student Center Café: Centrally located; offers fresh sustainable seafood; omelets; vegan, vegetarian, and organic cuisine; authentic Chinese food and sushi; wraps and sandwiches made to order; Grill’d with made-to-order steaks, seafood, and chicken, grilled hamburgers, and many other seasonal specialties; Sono offering tacos, burritos, and bowls. It also includes a large salad bar with a wonderful variety of local fruits and vegetables and house-made dressings. In addition, the Café offers a vast grab-and-go selection of salads and sandwiches.
Au Bon Pain: Featuring all of the Au Bon Pain signature sandwiches and salads, delicious soups, coffee, freshly brewed teas, fresh Danishes and bakery specialties, a large assortment of grab-and-go items, and seasonal features.
Hofstra University Club: Open daily for lunch. Features a seasonal menu with fresh made-to-order entreés of fresh seafood, sandwiches, salads, grilled selections, and daily specials. A full-service white tablecloth dining experience.
Health and Wellness Center

Located on the North Campus, the Health and Wellness Center is open from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. on Friday. The Health and Wellness Center is staffed by nurse practitioners and registered nurses. Appointments can be made by calling 516-463-6745. A current HofstraCard must be presented at the time of medical care. All medical care is confidential.
Prescriptions, consultation fees, laboratory fees, and X-ray charges are the responsibility of the patient.

All students are required to have a HofstraCard. This card is necessary in order to withdraw books from the libraries, gain access to the David S. Mack Fitness Center, Swim Center, residence halls, Computer Center, and other facilities of the University. The card also serves as a dining card for those individuals who are dining plan holders. Dining points can be used only in the dining facilities on campus. You may also add Dutch Debits to your card, which can be used at the bookstore, copiers, drink, and snack vending machines, laundry rooms, computer repair center, and special events except in the dining facilities. New cards are issued at the Office of HofstraCard Services, Room 110 Mack Student Center, Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, at which time a picture is taken. A valid picture ID (driver’s license or U.S. passport) is required for proof of date of birth. Cards become inactive upon completion of affiliation with the University.
