Requirements for J.D. Admission
An applicant must hold a bachelor’s degree from a college or university that is accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. A student may file for admission on the basis of three years of undergraduate work provided that he or she is working toward a bachelor’s degree and will have been awarded it prior to the start of lectures at the School of Law (unless a student is currently enrolled in a 3+3 program with Hofstra Law School). No specific undergraduate course of study is required.
The members of the Admissions Committee take a holistic approach to the application review process, giving each part of the application serious consideration. The LSAT and undergraduate record, although important, are not determinative. Rigor of the undergraduate course of study as reflected by the applicant’s college transcripts, graduate study, demonstrated commitment to public service, work experience, leadership experience, extracurricular or community activities, history of overcoming economic or other disadvantage, race and ethnicity, personal experiences with discrimination, overcoming disability, geographic diversity, diversity of experience and background, maturity, ability to communicate, foreign language proficiency, honors and awards, service in the armed forces, publications, exceptional personal talents, and other pertinent information is also considered by the Admissions Committee. Please note that final decisions are only released in writing under the signature of the Dean or the Assistant Dean of Enrollment Management.
Applications for admission must be submitted on the law school’s official application which can be found on the Web, law.hofstra.edu. The $60 application fee is waived for those who submit their application electronically. Please refer to the application procedures listed on the Web for details on program options, deadlines and requirements.
Reapplication
Candidates who have previously applied for admission to Hofstra Law School may choose to reapply. Applicants must complete a new application indicating the year they had previously applied and submit it along with the application fee. Previous applicants are strongly encouraged to submit an updated personal statement and resume along with any additional letters of recommendation they feel are appropriate. All applicants must maintain an active LSDAS subscription.
Transfer Students
Admission to the J.D. program as a transfer student is highly selective. Applications are reviewed for outstanding law school performance and for evidence that the candidate will contribute significantly to the Hofstra Law School community and to the legal profession. Transfer applicants are required to submit the J.D. transfer application and have an active registration with LSDAS. The LSDAS report, at least one letter of recommendation from the last law school attended, an official law school transcript and letter of good academic standing are required of all transfer students. Credit for courses previously taken is determined by the Law School’s Dean’s Office. Final decisions regarding transfer applications are not rendered until all prior law school transcripts have been received and are only released in writing. The application fee remains the same for both transfer and first-time applicants.
Visiting Students
A limited number of non-Hofstra students may be eligible for admission as visiting students provided they are currently enrolled and in good academic standing at another ABA-approved law school. Applications are available from the Admissions Office and must be accompanied by the regular Law School application fee. Hofstra students who wish to visit at another law school must receive written permission from the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs. Permission will be granted only in the most extraordinary circumstances, and the student must meet all Hofstra requirements for graduation. |
