Law 3832 - Mediation Externship
Externship will involve conducting actual mediations (under the supervision of an expert practitioner), as well as attending a bi-weekly “supervision meeting” to discuss what is learned in doing the mediations. The mediations will involve two kinds of family disputes: parent/child conflicts, with mediation conducted at the Family and Children’s Association, a nonprofit agency in Mineola; and post-divorce conflicts about custody/visitation/child support, with mediations conducted at the Nassau County Family Court. Students must be prepared to devote 4-6 hours per week to mediating cases, and an additional 2 hours every other week to supervision meetings. This is a 3-credit course and is offered on a Pass/Fail basis. Enrollment is limited to 8 students, and the Mediation Principles/Practice course is a pre/co-requisite for the Externship. (That is, in order to be admitted to the Externship, a student must be currently taking (or have taken previously) the Principles/ Practice course.) In these two courses, you will have a first-class practice experience, and you will learn skills that will greatly enhance your performance as a lawyer.
