LAW 5911 - Pro Bono Practice Seminar


The 2-credit weekly seminar component will focus on introducing students to the unique legal issues of the poor.  The class will review historical and contemporary problems and legal responses to poverty in our country.  Students will be introduced to the legal frameworks for several areas of poverty law, including public benefits, housing, consumer protection, family law, and employment.  Particular emphasis will be placed on the various legal strategies for enforcing the legal rights of poor people.  Students will also be challenged to consider new trends in the provision of legal services for the poor.  The weekly seminar will also include regular discussions about the students’ placement experiences, including issues of professionalism and professional responsibility.  Students will be expected to submit a 5-7-page reflective paper at the conclusion of the seminar.  Students will be given a grade of Pass/Fail based on the paper and class participation.  Enrollment will be limited to 10 students to ensure proper supervision and oversight.

Prerequisites & Notes
Must be taken with LAW 5910 - Pro Bono Scholars Program.
