ITAL 102 - Three Great Films: Continuing Language Study

Semester Hours: 3
Periodically

This course is designed to follow ITAL 003 or the equivalent. The three films chosen for the course function as units that collectively address either a contemporary sociocultural issue, a theme, a director, a genre, or an actor. Conversational skills are developed through exercises that elicit student commentary on the film: for example, adopting a character’s voice to re-enact a key scene or explaining what one thinks what will happen next and why. Speaking exercises are complemented by vocabulary enrichment and growth in the grammatical competence needed for communication. The films themselves are examined as cultural expressions in their own right, and students will learn about their place both in cinematic and Italian history.  Reading and writing skills will also be targeted through level-appropriate readings on topics related to each film and focused writing activities that give students the opportunity to display the communicative and cultural competence developed through each film encounter. Students will also be asked to bring awareness to another Italian film that relates to the three studied with a final, in-class oral presentation, thus making concrete recommendations to their peers of other Italian films to watch beyond the course itself.

Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes:
Successful completion of  ITAL 003  or equivalent. (Formerly Advanced Italian Language).
