ITAL 105 - Music and Culture–Continuing Language StudySemester Hours: 3 Periodically
This course is designed to follow on ITAL 3. Reading and conversational skills are developed through a variety of Italian songs and their lyrics, which we will examine as cultural markers as well as poems in their own right. Moreover, we will explore how various singers and songwriters can be connected to linguistic and regional cultures, and how some of the singers (“cantautori”) both influence and reflect the times. Because of the nature of different musical genres and their colloquial expressions, we will focus on acquiring various registers of slang and vernacular, or “everyday” language—including some basic terms in related dialects. Each song unit will also isolate specific grammatical structures. All class meetings will include conversational components through discussions of themes and interpretations of the music. Students will also be encouraged to share their own Italian music interests with the class
Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes: Successful completion of ITAL 003 or equivalent. (Formerly Advanced Italian Language.)
