Reading and discussion of major works which have helped shape the view of the individual and society as well as the human condition in Japan.Current Special Topics LIT 096: (LT) Gender and Sexuality in Japanese Literature & CultureThis course examines representations of gender and sexuality in Japanese culture and literature, by tracing both heteronormative and queer figures and relationships (heterosexual, homosocial/homoerotic, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, etc.) in Japanese literature, graphic novels (manga), film, theater, and TV drama. This course will take us to discussions about how these cultural practices conform or challenge socially-given identity practices, and to examinations of the complexities of gender, sex, and sexuality in Japan.
