WST 150 A-Z - (IS) Topics in Women’s Studies

Semester Hours: 3


This course will offer an in-depth study of major issues in Women’s and Gender Studies. Topics will reflect current developments in the field and will address issues such as women’s roles in work, family, sexuality, and reproduction; language, representation, and performance; feminist politics and policies; transnational and cross-cultural perspectives of gender; and the impact of science and technology on women’s lives.


Current Special Topics

WST 150J: (IS) Topics in Women’s Studies: Women and Human Rights CRN: 23790

This course will focus on women and human rights in the context of an increasingly globalized world. The course will include an examination of the definitions, history, and evolution of the intersectional issues surrounding gender and human rights. The course will also assess some of the major agreements, legal mechanisms, movements, and organizations that are employed to monitor women’s rights. Lectures, readings, debates, and films will be incorporated into the class.

WST 150V: (IS) Graphic Embodiment: Comic books and bodies CRN: 23791

This course will examine comic books and graphic novels (as well as narratives that inform or inspire such work, such as television shows, political cartoons, and medical illustrations). A basic aim of the course will be to examine the ways that comic books and graphic novels show what it means to have a body and how that meaning is affected by concepts like race, ethnicity, gender, and social class. Because some kinds of comic books and graphic novels have so much cultural power Spiderman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Mickey Mouse for example we will pay particular attention to the ways that these works affect concepts like race, gender, social class, and ethnicity.

Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes:
