INTD 003A - General Undergraduate InternshipSemester Hours: 0.5-3 Fall, Spring, Summer
This course provides Hofstra students with the opportunity to participate in internships for academic credit, combining learning in the classroom with practical experience. Participation is limited to students who cannot participate in a departmental internship within Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (HCLS), but have completed a substantial amount of liberal arts coursework to support the independent research required for course credit.
Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes: Domestic internships for liberal arts credit are available to Hofstra University students with junior status (i.e., 60 or more earned credits), completion of WSC 001 and WSC 002, an overall grade point average of a 2.5 or higher, and at least 9 credits of liberal arts coursework in HCLAS that is directly relevant for the proposed internship research project. To be eligible for internship credit, students must submit to the HCLAS Dean’s representative a completed general undergraduate internship application (described below) no later than November 1 (for a January or spring internship) or April 1 (for a summer or fall internship). If these deadlines fall on a day when the university is closed, students may submit the application on the next business day. Students who do not meet the application deadline will not be approved for INTD 003A credit.
Before applying for INTD 003A internship credit, students must meet with the HCLAS Dean’s representative. A meeting with the approved Hofstra College faculty advisor to discuss the academic portion of the internship is also required. Next, the student must complete a general undergraduate internship application and attach a 2 - to 5-page research proposal with references that has been approved by the faculty advisor and the Dean’s representative. Also, the student must arrange for a letter of intent to be sent directly from the internship site to the Dean’s representative, noting the student’s direct supervisor contact information, the student’s work responsibilities, the internship location, and the days and times the student is scheduled to work. The application and the letter of intent from the internship site must be received by the Dean’s representative no later than the deadlines stated above (i.e., November 1 or April 1). Students must complete at least 40 hours at the internship site for each semester hour of academic credit. Students seeking only one credit for their internship are responsible for completing a basic learning report at the end of the semester. Students seeking more than one credit will be responsible for completing both a basic learning report and a research paper as discussed with and approved by their faculty advisor and the Dean’s representative. May be repeated up to a maximum of 4s.h. Grading is Pass/Fail only.
