This course draws on New York City’s diverse cultural history to investigate how a particular place – here, one of the world’s most varied and vibrant literary and artistic hubs –can inspire and provoke the imagination to unparalleled heights. We will draw on a variety of disciplines – psychology, history, and aesthetics – to explore how literary artists transport their readers and audiences into the City’s past, present, and future. Authors will include Emma Lazarus, Walt Whitman, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Stephen Crane, Allen Ginsburg, Tom Wolfe, J.D. Salinger, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Langston Hughes, Gwendolyn Bennett, Gary Shteyngart.
Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes: WSC 001 . Required course for English majors in the Literatures in English concentration. May not be taken on a Pass/D+/D/Fail basis. As individual subjects are selected, each is assigned a letter (A-Z) which is affixed to the course number.
