WSC 135 - Writing for Healthcare Audiences

Semester Hours: 3
In this experiential learning course, students will interact with an aging population to observe, interview, and write about and with participants and their caregivers. Through this experience, as well as assigned readings, research, written reflections, lectures, and class discussions, students will be introduced to the increasing industry focus on patient experience and person-centered care and the importance of enhanced client/provider communication, and value narrative and dignity therapies. Engaging with conversations in discourse studies, disability studies, and social gerontology, students will be able to articulate arguments about the often problematic ways aging is represented in our culture, and to use that understanding to compose alternative narratives.
