SPED 264 - Special Education in Today’s Schools - Grades 7-12

This introduction to the field of special education provides the historical foundations, legal mandates, and cultural and ethical viewpoints regarding the responsibilities of educators toward students with disabilities grades 7-12. Topics include an examination of legislation and relevant case law, the referral process, the characteristics, causation, and prevalence of high and low-incidence disabilities, the variety of settings in the continuum of services provided to students with disabilities, materials, and methods to meet the special needs of adolescent students with mild, moderate, and severe disabilities and current issues in the field of special education. Field visits of 20 clock hours are required. Recommended prior to special methods courses.
