LING 281S – Special Topics in Linguistics: Swahili and Bantu Linguistics
Study of the East African Bantu language Swahili. Analysis of the 15-member Bantu grammatical gender system, distinctive narrative tense utilization, and other, sociolinguistic topics. Elementary speaking, reading, and writing. Discussion of partnering with a specialist to do forensic linguistics cases in languages the analyst does not command. A knowledge of another language, especially from a language family not previously spoken or studied helps to better realize the connections and contrasts among languages, thus facilitating a higher awareness of language in general.
Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes: May be repeated for credit when topics vary. As individual subjects are selected, each is assigned a letter (A-Z) which is affixed to the course number. Specific titles and course descriptions for special topics courses are available in the online class schedule. May not be taken on a Pass/Fail basis.
