JRNL 218 - Innovative News Platforms and Product Development

Semester Hours: 3
Journalism today is much more than words, storytelling and ethics. The purpose of this class is to show students how to develop news on various platforms and how those platforms are built.

The implementation of a content management system can be just as important as the proper tools and solutions for search engine optimization. News leaders today must be able to work with and as product managers and product developers just as much as they should be able to edit stories and develop content planning. From over-the-top streaming to mobile app development to set-top-box news distribution there are so many avenues of product development that help get news to countless consumers.

Revenue products are also important. As much as journalists and editors should not be focused on the business of making money, it is a business and products in the digital landscape can develop revenues and profits for the company at-large. Many of these revenue products could be impacted by storytelling. Understanding that fine line and balance of work within a larger organization will be important for students.

Students will also be able to think and act like news leaders with an eye on growth and strategy as much as implementation and operations.
