LAW 2975 - The Practical Aspects of Being a Lawyer
This course is designed to provide students with exposure to the practical skills necessary for a successful transition into the practice of law. Over the course of the semester, students will be placed in law firm teams and will be expected to collaborate with team members to work through a variety of simulated problems in an effort to develop best practices for ethical, professional – and successful – conduct in an increasingly competitive, complex, and multinational world.
For example, students will learn about
the different ways a law firm can be structured.
law firm finance.
client billing structures.
how to draft and negotiate documents such as client retainer agreements and standard client communications.
how to construct business and client development plans.
how to mediate between a variety of different types of colleagues and clients.
critical time management skills to facilitate working on multiple projects.
how to enhance oral presentation skills.
The course will also focus attention on the ethical issues that lawyers face in everyday practice as well as issues of law firm liability.
