LAW 3501 - Understanding Statutes and Regulations
This course is designed to teach the skills necessary for analyzing statutes and regulations to extract legal rules and policies, as well as those portions of judicial decisions that interpret statutes and regulations. These “logic skills” include: analyzing the linguistic structures of sentences found in statutes, regulations, and judicial decisions, as a means of interpreting the meaning of the text; retrieving information from such documents that is critical to understanding their meaning; formulating complete and operational legal rules; and constructing systems of rules for use in policy analysis and arguments. Students will work through a series of modules that are focused on particular logic skills. Each module will consist of the following online elements: background text, images, videos, and interactive examples; exercises to be performed; feedback on those exercises (often including peer review); a summary of the material covered. Examples and exercises will be drawn entirely from health law statutes, regulations, and judicial decisions. There will be a mid-term and a final examination.
