LAW 3898 - Land Use Regulation This seminar generally examines government efforts, particularly at local levels, to regulate the use of urban, suburban and rural real estate. Seminar classes treat a combination of constitutional and administrative law questions often related to political and economic issues. More specifically, we study zoning, land-use planning, planned-unit developments, environmental issues, and racism and social segregation. Variable emphasis is placed on such concepts and instrumentalities as height, bulk and population density controls, incentive zoning, transferable development rights, historic preservation, aesthetics and so-called “smart” and slow growth measures.
Students may earn seminar credit either by preparing a research paper or by taking a final exam. Additional course credit may be earned through in-class, after-class and electronic participation.
Credits: 2 or 3
