LAW 3900 - Seminar on Law and Policymaking in Washington, D.C.
This seminar must be taken with the Hofstra Law in D.C. Externship Program (See LAW 5900).
HLDC students are required to enroll in a three-credit weekly evening Seminar on Law and Policymaking in Washington, D.C., that will be taught in Washington, D.C. The seminar will provide substantive grounding in law and policymaking, and will complement and enhance students’ field placement experiences by allowing them to explore constitutional, statutory and regulatory issues from multiple perspectives. The weekly seminar will also include regular “rounds” discussions in accordance with the confidentiality requirements of students’ respective placements. Guest speakers will supplement assigned readings and classroom discussions. Students will learn how law, policy, politics, ideology, process, ethics and professional responsibility intersect and affect the role of the lawyer in law and policymaking in the nation’s capital.
HLDC students are expected to actively participate in classroom discussions and will be required to complete a paper of 15 to 20 pages. The paper will require in-depth legal research and analysis. Students must obtain topic approval and must also submit an outline and a draft in advance. Students will be given a letter grade based on the paper and class participation.
Prerequisites & Notes
Pre-Requisites/Co-Requisites: Lawyers’ Ethics or its equivalent.
Other Limitations: Only third-year students will be permitted to enroll in the HLDC Externship Program and they must apply and receive approval of the placement and the proposed supervisor at the placement. As part of the approval process, the Academic Dean must ensure that the student has been advised about the limit on non-classroom hours, and must certify that the student will not exceed that limit if enrolled in the externship and that all other graduation requirements will be met.
