LIT 074 - (LT) Jewish Voices in Russian CultureSemester Hours: 3 Periodically
We will study literary texts originally written by Jewish writers in the Russophone lands starting from the 1800s in the Russian Empire through the Soviet era and beyond to the present day, including the works of Jewish writers working in Russian after emigration from the Russophone lands (Russian Empire, Soviet Union, Russian Federation and parts of former Soviet Republics where Russian is spoken). The course will take up the historical background both of the Russophone lands and the experience of Jews, as a minority in those lands, as well as the cultural context (e.g., music, painting, and starting in the early 20th century, film) in which Jewish writers worked. In our reading, discussion, and writing, we will focus our attention on the dual, and some might say dueling, Jewish and Russian identities of the authors.
