RHET 005 - (AA) History of Rhetoric

Semester Hours: 3
Periodically

This course explores how persuasive communication has been theorized, taught, and practiced from ancient times to the present. We seek to understand not only past perspectives on such things as the nature of truth and its relationship to language, the reasoning process, emotion, bodily communication, visual imagery, and the transition from orality to literacy but also how these perspectives may be reinterpreted and reevaluated for the twenty-first century. In so doing, we grapple with enduring questions about the relationship of rhetoric to technology, culture, politics, and power.
