LAW 3833 - Externship, Labor & Employment Law

In this course, students’ placements can be with government agencies, law firms, nonprofit organizations, legal counsel offices of unions or employers that practice labor or employment law. Each student works 12 hours per week at the assigned office for a total of 168 hours during the 14-week semester. The student must produce a minimum of 15 pages of substantial written legal work based upon legal research over the course of the semester. The course includes a weekly one-hour seminar in which students examine substantive and ethical legal issues that have arisen during their placements. They also participate in professional skills exercises and submission of related written assignments. The faculty supervisor is also in contact with the attorney in charge of each placement during the semester to ensure the continued quality of the placement. This course may be taken only once by a student.  The students’ field placement work is graded on a pass/fail basis and students receive a letter grade for the seminar component.
