RTVF 107 - Cinematography and Lighting for FilmSemester Hours: 3 Fall, Spring
In this deep dive into cinematography and lighting, you will learn the techniques of studio and location lighting, the responsibilities of the Director of Photography and critical members of the camera and grip/electric teams, and the creative and aesthetic relationship between the cinematographer and director on a narrative film. You will learn how we got to where we are now, the evolution of the motion picture camera, lighting instruments, and the capture of light on both traditional photo-chemical media, as well as RAW video capture and the cinematographer’s modern relationship with the filmmaking process from the pre-production phase through the delivery of resources. Film emulsions, exposure, filters, camera placement, composition, movement, and continuity of shots and lighting will be covered—emphasis placed on the importance of light in telling a story. Practical exercises and projects will be shot on 35mm and 16/Super-16mm film and digital cinema cameras.
