DSST 150C - Special Topic: Neurodiversity
This disability studies course will examine several forms of neurodivergence, that is, a neurological, mental, and cognitive difference that distinguishes individuals from the neurotypical majority. These may include ADHD, dyslexia, and epilepsy, and the course will devote particular attention to autism. Readings and discussions will address the history of thinking about neurodivergence as well as the activist neurodiversity movement that promotes understanding many such differences as forms of diversity, not pathology, and advocates for the rights and inclusion of neuro minorities. Through readings and other media, the course will attend to the voices of neurodivergent people. This course may serve as an elective in the Disability Studies minor or in the Pre-Health major with a concentration in Disability Studies. With the permission of the Director of Disability Studies, this course could substitute for DSST 002.
Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes: Subjects will change from semester to semester and the course may be repeated for credit when topics vary. Specific titles and course descriptions for special topics courses are available in the online class schedule.
