LAW 3806 - Law and Ethics at the End of Life This course will address the legal and ethical issues engendered by our increasing technological control over the end of life. In particular, the class will consider the ethical arguments and legal interventions around: (i) the definition of death; (ii) patient autonomy and informed consent; (iii) refusal/withdrawal of life-sustaining interventions by capacitated and incapacitated patients, (iv) issues around the use of advance directives and surrogate decision makers; (v) physician aid-in-dying; (vi) medical futility; and (vii) organ donation.
