LAW 2531 - Externship Seminar, Medical-Legal This externship is a three-credit course for students placed in Northwell Health’s legal departments. The placements will involve rotations between two of the following legal departments: Office of Legal Affairs, Feinstein Department (Intellectual Property), Managed Care Contracting Team, Compliance, Procurement, Information Technology, Human Resources and Risk. The externship will expose students to the legal practice of in-house attorneys in a hospital system. Students will perform legal tasks under the supervision of a practicing attorney.
The Externship Program is divided into a one-hour weekly seminar (1 credit, letter graded) and a field work (2 credits, pass/fail) component. Students are required to complete 168 hours of field work over the 14-week semester. The three credits qualify towards the 6-credits of experiential courses required for graduation.
To register for the course, students must receive approval from the Professor and from the Director of Externships & Pro Bono Programs.

FIELD PLACEMENT – 2 credits
The students will be required to work a minimum of 168 hours during the fourteen-week semester which will count towards two credits. Each student will be required to produce a minimum of 15 pages of legal writing they completed during the externship. The Professor will contact each of the students’ supervisors to discuss the student’s progress and any concerns that either the student or the supervisor may want to address. The supervisory attorney will be asked to submit a short evaluation and the students will be required to submit their own evaluation of the externship experience.
CLASS SEMINAR – 1 Credit
In conjunction with field placement, students will participate in a one-seminar taught by the course Professor. The class seminar will review the following topics: The role of in-house counsel, IT requirements, compliance guidance from HHS, HIPAA Rules, managed contracting, and intellectual property rights in healthcare.
The seminar will include a class session on “bias, cross-cultural competency and racism,” thus meeting the requirements of ABA Section 303(c). Students must submit weekly time sheets to the Professor. The students will also be required to prepare and submit to the Professor a three-to-five-page reflective memo on the externship experience. Students may elect to share these memos with the class, although not required.
