CLL 155 - (LT) Medieval Literature

This course introduces students to literary texts from a variety of medieval European traditions. Readings will illustrate the broad scope of genres of the time, including love poetry, epic, letters, dramas, theology, biography, and romantic-erotic fables. Conveying the variety of European experiences within the shared values of Christian culture, this course will explore key medieval ideas like kingship and family, social identity, agriculture and trade, and feudalism in works that may include Codes of Justinian, Confessions of Saint Augustine, Beowulf, the Nibelungenlied, The Song of Roland, the Summa Theologica of Thomas Aquinas, Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, and Dante’s Divine Comedy.
