EXPH 179A - Readings in Athletics
Individualized course geared towards student athletes, designed to meet special interests of the student and to fill gaps in the student’s understanding of physical education and recreation.
Prerequisites: Written consent of the chairperson of the department and of the instructor who will serve as a tutor. Ordinarily, open only to juniors and seniors who are capable of independent study.
EXPH 179B - Exercise Training Individuals with Parkinson’s
This course will provide students with a thorough understanding of Parkinson’s disease (PD). Through lectures, group discussions, and presentations, students will be taught the basic neuroanatomy, physiology, and current research associated with PD. Students will also have an opportunity to supervise individualized exercise programming for medically stable Parkinson’s clients in a safe exercise environment under the supervision of trained faculty. (Students must have current CPR/AED certification.)
EXPH 179C - Clinical Applications in Anatomy and Physiology
This course will further students’ understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the human body using applied knowledge related to the Emergency Department (ED). Students should be prepared to actively participate in class and shadow shifts, during which they will apply the knowledge they learn in class. Weekly quizzes will be given to promote student learning of the material. Pre-requisites: HSCI 103 and HSCI 105. Notes: The course will be held on Wednesdays from 2:40 PM to 4:05 PM at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Students will gain experience as research assistants by working regular shifts in the emergency department at either North Shore University Hospital or Long Island Jewish Medical Center. EXPH 179D - Cultural Competency in Health
This course is designed to provide students in the health professions program with an overview of specific cultural characteristics of major cultural groups in the United States; explore the relationship between language, culture, and health care; identify health beliefs and health care systems; describe cultural competence and identify specific culturally competent practices.
Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes: As individual subjects are selected, each is assigned a letter (A-Z) and added to the course number. Any course may be taken a number of times so long as there is a different letter designation each time it is taken. Specific titles and course descriptions for special topics courses will be available once released, through the online class schedule.
