DPT 503 - Professional Issues in Physical Therapy Semester Hours: 2 This course focuses on professional ethics, values, responsibilities, and professionalism. This course covers ethical and legal issues affecting the physical therapy profession, including patients’ rights to confidentiality and dignity. This course provides an overview of the healthcare delivery system and ethics in healthcare with special emphasis on physical therapy Code of Ethics, delivery of competent, ethical, legal, compassionate care, the Guide for Practice, and Evidence-based practice. Case studies and dilemmas are presented to facilitate discussions on the ethics within patient education and the physical therapy professional code of ethics and standards. Communication skills, both written, verbal, and non-verbal (active/effective listening, empathetic responding), are reviewed and presented. The role and responsibilities of the physical therapist assistant are discussed. The course will explore the career development of the physical therapist as a leader, teacher, and advocate in multiple settings to prepare the student for the evolving health care environment. This course will introduce the students to professional development, cultural difference, and interprofessional education.
Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes: Open only to students enrolled in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program. May not be taken on a Pass/Fail basis.
