DPT 527 - Geriatric Physical Therapy Semester Hours: 2 This course is designed to cover geriatric physical therapy science and practice. This course emphasizes the role of physical therapy in the management of the elderly population. This course provides an in-depth study of theories of normal and pathological aging and analysis of anatomical and physiological, physical, functional, social, cognitive and psychosocial aging-related changes. The course covers the impacts of age-related changes and their implications for physical therapy practice in order to promote optimal care, functional outcomes, and wellness in older adults. Elder abuse, advance directives, issues involved with death and dying, individual and family responses to disability and aging, screening for potential health problems, and the importance of education, prevention and health promotion are presented.
Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes: Prerequisites for this course include all preceding coursework in the curriculum. Any exceptions require approval from the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Program Director. May not be taken on a Pass/Fail basis.
