DPT 513 - Therapeutic Modalities


Semester Hours: 2
This course focuses on critically analyzing application of physical therapy modalities that are used by physical therapists. The course covers physical modalities such as superficial and deep thermal agents, hydrotherapy, aquatic therapy, electrical modalities, intermittent compression, and mechanical traction. Special emphasis on the use of modalities in terms of principles, physiological response to treatment, clinical-decision making in: selection, application, indications, contra-indications, precautions, and patient education for evaluation and treatment of various physical dysfunctions. The course introduces biofeedback and electrodiagnostic testing: nerve conduction velocity (NCV) and electromyography (EMG).  Emphasis on evidence-based practice through analysis of appropriate literature. Case studies and group discussion will be used to foster clinical decision-making, critical thinking, and collaborative learning.  

Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes:
Prerequisites for this course include all preceding coursework in the curriculum. Any exceptions require approval from the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT).  May not be taken on a Pass/Fail basis.
