HIST 141 - (CC, HP) Slavery in the Americas

Semester Hours: 3
The course examines the history of slavery as it developed in different regions of the Americas, following people, commodities, and ideas as they crisscross continents. This course is comparative with a strong focus on Latin America and the Caribbean, where most indigenous and African people were enslaved. It will the examine religious, political, and economic importance of slavery to the European colonies in the Americas.  We will also explore resistance to slavery, and study what historians can tell us about effectively changing such oppressive institutions. This course seeks to sharpen students’ research skills and knowledge. By understanding slavery, we can better understand colonization, independence, and modern capitalism. Together, we will ask questions such as, “What similarities and differences existed between slavery in those colonies, and the system implemented in British or French colonies in the Americas?” “How did indigenous slavery develop and change throughout colonialism?” and “How do the legacies of slavery impact our world today?”
