PSY 142 - Qualitative MethodsSemester Hours: 3 In Psychology, we often focus on quantitative research that uses tools and methods to describe effects and outcomes in terms of numbers (i.e., counts, frequencies, averages, and scores). Quantitative research may rely on descriptive and inferential statistics that identify aggregate patterns in target samples and populations. However, we are not always interested in “how much” questions or numerical differences. Instead, we want to ask “why” questions that require listening to the reasons people have or the explanations they give. Qualitative research includes tools to analyze written responses to find themes and common experiences beyond just numbers. Qualitative research can also be used to conduct structured case studies on individuals with unique conditions or experiences that could not be measured through a broader sample. Using both quantitative and qualitative methods together (a mixed-method approach) can be ideal for understanding the human experience.
