PSY 178 - PsychopharmacologySemester Hours: 3 This course explores the properties of psychoactive drugs and their effects on the brain, mind and body. We will build on the foundations you learned in Behavioral Neuroscience (PSY 177) to further your understanding of the brain’s neurotransmitter systems and will discuss the ways in which external substances interact with these neurochemical pathways through principles of neuropsychopharmacology. We will address psychoactive drugs used in the treatment of psychological conditions, as well as those used non-medically (“recreational” drugs or “drugs of abuse”). In addition, we will consider psychoactive substances in a biopsychosocial context, including discussion of their uses across human cultures and throughout history, and contemporary debates surrounding medical and psychological treatments, legalization and criminalization, and stigma and social acceptance surrounding various drugs.
