EADM 262A - Understanding External Environments: Social, Political, Economic, and Legal Contexts of Schools Once a year
Exploration of the social, economic, political, and legal influences on educational
policy and practice. The administrative implications of demographic change, shifts
in societal expectations, political pressures, judicial and legislative actions,
societal dysfunctions such as racism and sexism, and funding sources for schools
are examined. Students relate these external environments to real school settings
in an attempt to understand how external forces shape what happens in schools.
Competencies are developed through case studies, role-playing, lecture/discussion,
team and individual assignments, and substantive readings. Achievement is determined
through the quality and degree of mastery demonstrated in the undertaking of these
activities.
